Biographical Note
Kent Cooper, 1880-1965, was a journalist and Associated Press executive.

Scope and Content Note

Consist of the papers of journalist and Associated Press executive, Kent Cooper, 1880-1965. Most of the collection concerns his work as a journalist, but some of it relates to his work as a composer. There are also papers of his wife, Sarah (Sally) A. Gibbs Cooper, mostly dating after Kent's death.

Arrangement/Organization

Organized into the following series: I. Correspondence; II. Music; III. Writings; IV. Photographs; V. Miscellaneous; VI. Audio tapes; and VII. Scrapbooks.


Series: Box 1 Correspondence,

Organized into two sections: 1. Correspondence with colleagues, family and friends and arranged in alphabetical order. Replies by Kent and Sally Cooper are filed with the person with whom they were corresponding.

2. Condolence letters written to Sally upon Kent's death. These are also arranged alphabetically and are mostly photocopies.

Arranged by year, the photographs are primarily of board meetings and functions of the Associated Press. There are also some early family photographs, travel pictures, and a group documenting the dedication of the Kent Cooper Room in the Main Library of Indiana University in 1971.

Various materials on the following topics: Associated Press; Kent's death, including obituaries and a resolution by the AP upon his death; the sale of the Washington Times-Herald; Kent Cooper Room dedication. Also included are miscellaneous printed pieces and ephemera, including a metal life member card to the Sigma Chi Fraternity and lapel pins for AP, ASCAP, and Sigma Delta Chi

Eight reel-to-reel tapes. Includes: four tapes of music mostly composed by Kent, one tape of "Reuter speech" given in London, one tape of Wes Gallagher's speech at Kent Cooper Room dedication (May 16, 1971), two tapes of conversation between Kent, Sally, family and friends
