After trying to avoid a previuosly-unseen barbed-wire fence, Horace Kearney crashed his plane on Dunn Meadow. The University Archives has a reference file on this incident in its reference files under "B&G - Dunn Meadow - Airplane Crash of 1911". On December 12, 1912 Kearney and a reporter by the name of Chester Lawrence were killed when Kearney's plane "Snookums" crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Page 83 of the 1912 Gothic yearbook of Bloomington High School has a printed drawing of the incident at Dunn Meadow (see image P0109025). |
