First instructor of mathematics at Indiana University. Second faculty member at Indiana University after Baynard Rush Hall. Graduated from the University of Miami (Oxford, Ohio) in 1827; Second President of Louisville Collegiate Institute, 1838-1940; President of Louisville College, 1840-1844 (Louisville College is today The University of Louisville); Founded the Louisville Democrat of which he was the Editor until his death. The Louisville Democrat was eventually absorbed by Louisville Courier-Journal. Author of: "An Algebra on the Inductive Method of Instruction" (first published in 1840 by Morton and Griswold of Louisville, Kentucky. At present (2015) the only known probable first edition of this work can be found at the University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center). Also author of "A key to An Algebra Upon the Inductive Method of Instruction." Thomas D. Clark uses this image in volume one of his "Indiana University: Midwestern Pioneer: The Early Years". It is not known from where, or what publication Clark may have obtained the original image. NOTE: The University of Louisville has a portrait painting of Harney in the rotunda of their administration building. Their University Archives has a photograph of this painting.
