| description: | Schwinn bicycles were used in the Little 500 from 1951 to 1953. Beginning in 1954 thru 1999 Roadmaster bicycles were used. From 2000 thru 2006 Mongoose was used, then beginning in 2007 Schwinn was again used. Wilbur Shaw, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is driving the 1951 Indy 500 pace car. Herman B Wells sits in the front passenger seat. This image appears on page 20 of the June 1951 issue of the Indiana Alumni Magazine, and on page 6 of the May 15, 1951 issue of The Indiana Daily Student. Before the race the "Cavalcade of Bicycles" consisting of old bicycles, including high wheelers, circled the track. Qualification days for the first Little 500 were held on April 7, April 14, and April 21 and held at "...the quarter-mile street circling the Indiana University Auditorium." (C104.9 "Little 500 1951"). Today (2014) the north and east sides of this street that used to circle the IU Auditorium no longer exist. "Complete control of both qualifications and the race will be with the Contest Board of the Bloomington Bicycle Bureau. This includes the Board of Judges, the Technical Committee and the Scoring Committee." (C104.9 "Little 500 1951") |
