Bloomington resident Bill Coulter provides the following information via a September 11, 2015 e-mail to the Curator of Photographs, Bradley D. Cook: "[This advertisement] helps explain something that has puzzled me for some time. A couple of houses I've looked at appeared to be developed while the lot was still owned by the University Courts Realty Company. Taxes weren't paid on the lot by the new owner until well after the house was built. Now I know why. Another irregularity was that all the taxes on unimproved lots were listed under the name of T. J. Sare, who was an officer in the company. Usually the name of the company would appear as the party responsible for the taxes. The American Town Lot Co. must have been engaged as agent for the University Courts Realty Co. All transfers of lots from about 1915 on are in the name of University Courts Realty. Prior to that they were in the name of Elvet B. Rhodes, who subdivided the First Court of University Courts and sold the remaining unsold lots and un-subdivided land to the University Courts Realty Co. in October 1914. Among the 'High Class Restrictions' was a racial exclusion clause that allowed African-Americans to live in the subdivision only if they were servants in a white family's home. Only one of the three houses pictured is still standing. The center house was built by T. J. Sare and is now the LGBT center (on 7th street). The house on the left I think was the home of Joseph M. Nurre of the Nurre Mirror company. It was slated for demolition to make way for the Mathers Museum [after] it caught fire. It was located about where the loading dock for the museum is now located. The photo is a bit blurred, but it looks like the Showers-Holland house (see next) is in the background, which would confirm that it is Nurre's house. The house on the right was built on three lots for Beryl Showers Holland and her husband J. P. E. Holland. They sold it to Delta Tau Delta and it was later destroyed by fire. The fraternity rebuilt on the same site (northeast corner of 8th and Indiana) and later moved on. The rebuilt frat house is now part of the Mathers Museum. The University bought the entire Fourth Court of University Courts, the part between Woodlawn and Forrest and 7th and Tenth. So far as I know no single family residence was ever built on in the Fourth Court." NOTE: In 2015 the University Archives was able to confirm that the home at left was that of Joseph M. Nurre located at 617 E. Eighth Street (this is now, in part, the site of the Mathers Museum); and in 2023 that 705 E. Seventh had also been the residence of the Dean of the School of Education Henry Lester Smith. A story about balloonist "Clara" Belmont appears in the May 11, 1917 edition of The Bloomington Telephone. The article mentions she was "...an Indiana girl, was educated to be a school teacher..." A copy of this article has been filed in the IU Archives biographical clipping files under "Belmont, Stella (a.k.a "Clara"). |
