A September 17 or 22 (otherwise un-cited) newspaper clipping in the scrapbook of John L. Nichols (Collection C574) states that the "...new $35,000 opera house was opened last week with the play, 'The Sunny Side of Broadway'...It is constructed of Indiana limestone, with buff bricks, has a first floor, balcony and gallery, with a seating capacity of 1,500. The house has 15 exits...It is fitted up with open chairs, with eight boxes on either side. The boxes on the first night were sold at $75 each, and the entire first floor for this production brought $4,000..." Another completely un-cited clipping, on the same page as that noted above, states that the Harris Grand "...was open to the public last Wednesday night...the large crowd was admirably handled by manager Walter Hind..." Both articles mention Robert H. Harris as the builder/proprietor. The second article mentions Nichols as the architect and Caldwell & Drake as the contractors. |
