Central School

description:

Central School was located on the west side of College Avenue approximately halfway between Third Street and Smith Avenue (where today (2020) the Marriott Courtyard hotel is located). Construction on the school began in 1871 and was completed to a point where it could be used in September 1873. It appears that by late 1875 or January 1876 construction on other parts of the building was completed. Note that a high school and Indiana University's Preparatory Department had rooms on the third floor. According to the Monroe History Center: "According to an article published in the Star Courier on January 9th, 1953, Central was sold to the City of Bloomington and plans were set to raze the school to make way for a parking lot. Based on other newspaper clippings in our files, dismantling began in January/February 1953."
