description:

Inscription reads, in full: "To the | Indiana Union | Amelia Earhart | Oct. 22, 1936" Earhart visited the IU campus on October 22, 1936 to give a lecture in which she said flying was safer than motoring and stated her views on stricter codes for automobile drivers. An article about her visit appears on page 4 of the October 23, 1936 edition of The Indiana Daily Student. It reads, in part: "A more pressing question today than that of safety in aviation is the safety of the motoring public...Miss Earhart drove to Bloomington from St. Louis, Mo., in her Cord Cabriolet. Although she prefers air travel to motoring, she usually uses her automobile on lecture tours because of the inadequate and inconvenient landing fields at some of the cities she visits...'So naturally, I am interested in the campaign for highway safety,' she said. 'Obviously better and safer driving is a vital factor in the development of every-day traveling.' "
