description:

Preston Eagleson was the first African American to be a member of an IU athletic team (1892, 1893, 1894, and 1895 football teams - not 1894, 1895 and 1896 as is noted in the 1896 Arbutus yearbook). On those teams he played both left and right half-back. He was also known to be a punter. Eagleson was the second African-American to graduate from IU; Marcellus Neal graduated a year earlier in 1895. Eagleson was also the first African-American at IU to receive an advanced degree (AM 1906, Philosophy). His thesis was titled "Emerson's Views Concerning the Education of Man." This image scanned from page 43 (the Philosophy Dept. page) of the 1896 Arbutus yearbook.
