Biographical Note

Luvenia A. George is an ethnomusicologist and music educator with a B.M.Ed. from Howard University and M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland. Author of Teaching the Music of Six Different Cultures (World Music Press), a pioneering work in world music education, she has taught vocal and general music in grades K-12 and directed school choirs noted for excellence. As coordinator of the Duke Ellington Youth Project at the Smithsonian Institution, she coauthored the award-winning curriculum kit on which the project was based.

Arrangement

Arranged in four main series with multiple subseries.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of materials related to Smithsonian Institution programs, including the Duke Ellington Youth Project, in addition to gospel sheet music and related research materials from George's personal collection.

Series 1 includes planning and program documentation for various Smithsonian Institution programs including conference "Music of the Black American Composer," "Music of the Black Woman Composer," and the production "Quilting: A Docudrama" by the Smithsonian Institution, with correspondence to and from participants. Series 1 also includes programs from various Smithsonian Institution conferences: Race and Revolution, 2/6-7/1987; Deep Rivers, 2/2/2002; Of Songs, Peace, and Struggle, 1/18/2003 ; and Passages to Freedom, 3/1/2003.

Series 2 documents George's work with the Duke Ellington Youth Project and consists of Beyond Category: Duke Ellington Education Kit (2 audiocassettes, 1991 festival program, photographs, Teacher Resource Book, art transparencies, poster, and newspapers from 1919) ; publications related to the Duke Ellington Youth Project created by the A.J. Hayden Johnson Junior High School including student poetry, 2000-2002; concert programs from 1991-2002; Duke Ellington concert programs and articles collected by George; and music copied from the SI's Duke Ellington Collection for use in the program. The Duke Ellington Youth Project existed from 1991 to 2002, serving as an exemplar of collaborative outreach between public school systems and the National Museum of American History, which made archival resources and scholarly research available for the research and development of new educational curricula.

Series 3 includes gospel sheet music collected by George with an emphasis on Chicago composers and publishers, in addition to research and archival materials documenting Lucie E. Campbell.
