A Guide to the Collection at the Indiana University Archives of African
American Music and Culture
This collection is open to the public. Audiocassettes require the creation of
reference copies. If you are interested in listening to the contents of the
cassettes, please contact the AAAMC staff well in advance of your visit for
details.
Lee Bailey is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. He began his broadcasting career in 1970 as
an on-air personality in Sacramento and rose to fame while working at Los Angeles
radio station KUTE-FM. In 1979, Bailey formed Lee Bailey Productions, a voiceover
production company specializing in radio commercial spots and corporate slide
presentations. In 1983, Bailey and his wife, Diane Blackmon Bailey, created Bailey
Broadcasting Services (BBS) and
RadioScope: the Entertainment
Magazine of the Air
, a syndicated radio show.
RadioScope grew in popularity and led to other radio shows, including
The Hip Hop Countdown & Report and
Inside Gospel. Bailey is also the founder of the
Electronic Urban Report (EURWeb)
, a website
dedicated to urban entertainment news.
Demo tapes and samples for various Bailey Broadcasting Services Programs, including
Legends of R&B,
RadioScope, and
The Hip Hop Countdown &
Report
are located in the AAAMC's collection,
Black Radio: Telling It Like It Was. See
cass 1671 and cass 2676--cass 2678.
The collection consists primarily of audio tapes of two radio programs produced by
Bailey Broadcasting Services:
The Hip Hop Countdown &
Report
(1991-1998) and
RadioScope: The
Entertainment Magazine of the Air
(1990-1996). Press releases for
RadioScope broadcasts are also included.
