Abstract
The collection consists primarily of materials collected during research for Nelson George's book Where Did Our Love Go?: The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound (St. Martin's Press, 1985). This includes interviews (audiocassettes and transcripts), photographs, newspaper clippings, magazines, photocopies of legal documents, manuscripts, and correspondence.

Biographical Note

Born on September 1, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York, Nelson George is an author, journalist, music and culture critic, TV producer, filmmaker, and director. He has worked as the Black music editor for both Record World and Billboard. He has published more than a dozen novels, biographies and nonfiction books, produced films and documentaries, and won a Grammy for writing liner notes for James Brown's Star Time boxed set.

Scope and Content Note

This collection of materials related to Nelson George's research and other activities as a writer and director consists of interview transcripts, legal documents and court case materials, research files, periodicals, photographs, and audiocassettes. Interview transcripts have not been corrected for names; some transcripts and audiocassettes were acquired by George and the provenance has not been verified.

Caption affixed to verso: Rock and roll giant Chuck Berry guest stars as himself in Paramount Pictures' American Hot Wax , a film about the exciting early days of the music that defined the 50's generation. It was during an Alan Freed Show, re-created in the film, at the Brooklyn Paramount in which Berry invented the duck--he flashed across the stage, knees bent, with fluid grace that left the audience breathless.
