Abstract
The office of Undergraduate Development was instituted in 1959 by President Wells. The office of Undergraduate Development's responsibility is to encourage the development of the University's undergraduate program and to keep it in balance with the over-all growth of the institution. Collection consists of administrative records of the Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Development in two series: Administrative files, 1958-1971, containing correspondence, memos, reports, and speeches; Student Affairs files, 1958-1970, containing correspondence, memos, reports, minutes, publications, and newspaper clippings pertaining to student activities on campus.

Historical Note

The office of Undergraduate Development was instituted in 1959 by President Wells. Samuel E. Braden was appointed the first Vice-president and Dean. The office of Undergraduate Development's responsibility is to encourage the development of the University's undergraduate program and to keep it in balance with the over-all growth of the institution. The Vice-president and dean coordinates the work of the Junior (freshman) Division, the Honor's Division, Division of Student Personnel, Office of Records and Admissions the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aids, the Director of Women's Educational Programs, and the Student Health Service. Originally the Vice-President also directed the development of the University's regional campuses and coordinated activities in the fields of economic and educational opportunity; however these duties were removed from the area of undergraduate development at the end of Braden's tenure. The dean also serves as the Executive Director of ! the Indiana Conference of Higher Education, through which all the colleges and universities of Indiana cooperate to meet the higher educational needs of the State.

John W. Snyder, then Dean of the Junior Division of Undergraduate Development, was appointed Vice-President and Dean when Samuel E. Braden left to become President of Illinois State University. Snyder, a professor of history and a specialist on early civilizations of the Near East, joined the faculty in 1956. He holds a bachelor of divinity from Northwestern Theological Seminary and received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He taught at Bethel College and at the University of California Berkeley before coming to Indiana. Snyder was appointed acting chancellor of Indiana University at Bloomington in January of 1969. He left Indiana University in July 1969 to become President of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.

Scope and Content Note

The Undergraduate Development, Office of the Vice-President and Dean, John W. Snyder Collection comprises 12 cubic feet of material and is arranged in two series: 1) Administrative Files, 1958-1971, and 2) Student Affairs Files, 1958-1970. Snyder was Dean of the Junior Division from 1965 to 1967, Vice-President and Dean of Undergraduate Development from 1967-1969 and served as acting Chancellor from January 1969 until July 1969. The material in the collection covers all these positions although the bulk of the material concerns his tenure as Vice-president and Dean of Undergraduate Development. The earliest and latest dates in the collection represent transition periods and usually contain material from an earlier administration (Braden's) or in the case of the later dates, files from the Chancellor's office of Chancellor Byrum E. Carter who succeeded Snyder as acting chancellor. The bulk of the material in these folders pertain to Snyder, however.

The Administrative Files, 1958-1971, are arranged alphabetically by subject and in original order. They contain correspondence, memorandum, reports, and speeches. Most committee minutes and publications have been removed from the collection since they are available elsewhere in the archives. However, there are still a great number of files available on the various committees Snyder belonged to.

The Student Affairs Files, 1958-1970, are also arranged alphabetically by subject. They contain correspondence, memorandum, reports, minutes, publications, and newspaper clippings. Prominently featured are records on and about Student Government and files on the Open Visitation policy in campus residences.

These two series track some of the important changes in student life in the 1960s at Indiana University including the beginnings of the Afro-American Program, the fee protest movement at IU, and the new visitation privileges in dorms, fraternity and sorority houses.
