Biographical Note

Elvis Jacob Stahr, Jr. was born in Hickam, Kentucky on March 9, 1916. He married Dorothy Howland Berkfield on June 28, 1946. They had three children. He was educated at The University of Kentucky, Oxford University, Yale, and Harvard. After graduating from The University of Kentucky, he went on to study law at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He interrupted his law practice in New York to serve as an infantry officer throughout World War II. Dr. Stahr was dean of the University of Kentucky, College of Law in 1948. The University of Pittsburgh named him Vice-Chancellor in 1957. In January of 1959, he was appointed president of West Virginia University, serving until January of 1961 when he was selected by the late President John F. Kennedy as Secretary of the Army, resigning to become Indiana University president July 1, 1962. While president of Indiana University, he was also president of the Indiana Conference on Higher Education and the Midwestern Universities Research Association. He served as chairmen of the American Council on Education Special Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity. His presidency ended on September 1, 1968. President Stahr died at home from cancer on November 11, 1998.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of remarks, welcomes and speeches given by Elvis Jacob Stahr, Jr. during his presidency of Indiana University from July 1962-September 1968. It also includes notes, correspondence, and research material related to Stahr's speeches, including notes and drafts prepared by Dorothy Collins, who served as Research Associate for the President's Office during Stahr's tenure. The collection is arranged into two series: Chronological speech files and General files.
