Biographical Note
Barbara Shalucha was born on 9 December 1915 in Springfield, Vermont, to Joseph and
Sophie Shalucha. Shalucha graduated from the University of Vermont in 1937 with a
bachelor of arts degree and with a masters degree in 1938. She received her doctorate
degree from Ohio State University in 1947.
Following completion of her doctorate degree in 1947 Shalucha was hired as an instructor
in the botany department at Indiana University. She was hired for her special
perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. As a result Shalucha
co-founded Hilltop Gardens in 1948 where she served as director until her retirement in
1986. Shalucha's work at Hilltop earned her presidential citations from the Garden Clubs
of Indiana, from the National Council of State Garden Clubs, and in being appointed a
member of the advisory board for the Young Garden Council in Washington D.C. in 1963.
Other honors bestowed upon Shalucha include being appointed to the Food and Agriculture
Advisory Council of the White River Park Development in 1983 by then Indiana Governor
Robert D. Orr. Also in 1985 Shalucha was selected as a delegate by the China-United
States Scientific Exchange to lecture on botanical gardens in China.
Shalucha maintained active memberships in Sigma Xi, Sigma Delta Epsilon, Delta Kappa
Gamma, and Pi Alpha Xi.
Barbara Shalucha died on 10 May 1992.
Arrangement
Organized into six series: Personal Correspondence, Professional Development,
Publications, Teaching, Subject Files, and Awards.
Scope and Content Note
When transferred to the Archives, the Barbara Shalucha papers were mixed in with the
records of Hilltop Garden and Nature Center. These two collections were separated, but
researchers may also want to see the finding aid for the HIlltop Garden and Nature
Center, Collection C46
(http://purl.dlib.indiana.edu/iudl/findingaids/archives/InU-Ar-VAA2614
), as Dr. Shalucha’s work very much centered around Hilltop.
The Shalucha papers consist of six series: Personal Correspondence; Professional
Development; Publications; Teaching; Subject Files; and Awards.
The first series, Personal Correspondence, is arranged alphabetically and contains
correspondence between Barbara Shalucha and individuals from all over the world.
Materials in this series include correspondence from the from the time period Shalucha

correspondence with the Indiana Garden Club and the New York Botanical Gardens.
Professional Development , the second series, is arranged alphabetically and consists

Shalucha's resume and dissertation in addtion to materials related to the New York
Botanical Gardens and the National Civic Garden Centers.
The third series, Publications, is arranged alphabetically and contains articles
written by Barbara Shalucha or articles autographed and sent to her by professional
colleagues. Publications of interest include "Botany: A Research Report, Four New
Courses" and various articles on the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center programs.
Teaching, the fourth series is arranged alphabetically. This series four consists of
records pertaining to the courses in the botany department Shalucha taught and materials
include student papers, tests and class notes. Items of interests include the student
reports on the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center.
The fifth series, Subject Files, is arranged alphabetically by subject. Materials
