Historical Note
Joseph Swain was the ninth president of Indiana University from 1893 to 1902. He was
born on June 16, 1857 in Pendleton, Indiana, the son of Woolston and Mary Ann (Thomas)
Swain. Swain attended the academy in Pendleton and then entered Indiana University,
graduating with a B.L. degree in 1883 and M.S. in 1885. While at the university, Swain
attracted the attention of President David Starr Jordan. Jordan hired him as an
assistant instructor of mathematics and biology while Swain pursued his master's degree.
Swain met Frances M. Morgan while teaching at IU, and they were married on September 22,
1885 in Knightstown, Indiana. The Swains never had any children. He also took a leave of
absence for one year to study abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and
worked with renowned astronomer Piazzi Smith. Swain later published a memoir of his work
with Smith in a paper entitled, "An Experience with the Astronomer Royal of Scotland."
In 1891 he became head of Leland Stanford University's mathematics department and, two
years later, returned to his native state and assumed the presidency of Indiana
University for nine years. Swain then left to become president of Swarthmore College
outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He resigned from the position in 1921 and died on
May 23, 1927 after a long illness. He was buried in Friends Cemetery in Pendleton.
Arrangement
Indiana University President's Office records organized into two series, Addresses and
reports and Correspondence.
Scope and Content Note
Swain's correspondence reveals his dedication to recruiting top notch faculty, raising
academic standards, and increasing enrollment at Indiana University. He was president of
the Indiana State Teacher's Association from 1893-1894 and very active in the Young
Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) at local, state, and national levels. One of his
major concerns was high school and college accreditation; he was a member of the
National Education Association (N.E.A.). Swain eventually became the president of the
N.E.A. from 1913-1914.
Box 1 contains Swain's speeches, reports to the Trustees, and correspondence relating to
the presidency. The remaining boxes consist of university reports and the incoming
correspondence of the President's office. The correspondence is quite rich and includes
many prominent University figures and several noted national figures.
The final two boxes consist of letter press books, which hold the outgoing
correspondence of President Swain and other administrators. The books are in very poor
condition with the ink disappearing and are scheduled to be scanned in 2013 in an effort
to capture the information. The final volume contains a small amount of William Lowe
Bryan's correspondence, who served as Swain's successor.
