Historical Note

In 1972, Indiana University alumnus George Taliaferro was named Special Assistant to IU President John Ryan. While he assisted Ryan on a number of fronts, at the time of his hiring, his stated responsibilities were to include the development of equal opportunity policies and programs for staff and students on all of the IU campuses and assisting in recruiting and counseling minority students. One of his first assignments upon entering the position was to coordinate the Affirmative Action plan at IU. In 1982, Taliaferro was reassigned to the dean's office of the School of Social Work.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into four series: General files, University committees and task force, Outside committees, and Discrimination charges. Each series is arranged in roughly alphabetical order.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of records created by George Taliaferro during his tenure as Special Assistant to the President. The series and order of the records are as they came to the University Archives.

The first series, General files, is made up of general subject files and include correspondence, memos, and reports. Prominently featured are folders on Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO).

The next series, University committees & task force, holds information on a number of university committees Taliaferro was on, including the Anti- Discrimination Panel, the Building Services Committee, and the Equal Educational Opportunities Committee.

The third series, Outside committees & groups, consists of files on outside committees in which Taliaferro represented the University, such as the Rotary Club, the Bloomington Industrial Golf League, and the Camp Atterbury Job Corps.

The fourth and final series, Discrimination charges, consists of files brought together during discrimination cases the University was embroiled in. Included in the files is correspondence, memos, and reports. Because these files frequently include staff evaluations, these files are closed to researchers.
