Abstract
Mary Geraldine Hatt studied history at
Indiana University and went on to complete an MA in International Relations before
teaching social studies in South Bend, Indiana. Her international experience includes
serving in the American Red Cross Hospital in Europe and receiving the first Fulbright
Scholarship for travel to South Africa. Her papers consist of correspondence beginning
with her freshman year at I.U., various materials relating to Miss Hatt's time in South
Africa as a Fulbright Scholar, and travel diaries which record her frequent trips
throughout the world.
Access Restrictions
Collection is open for research. Advance notice required.
Biographical Note
Mary Geraldine "Gerry" Hatt graduated from South Bend Central High School at the age of
16 in 1928. Thinking her too young for college, her parents kept her home for one year
before sending her to Indiana University in 1929. Miss Hatt completed her AB in History
in 1933 and went on to earn an MA in International Relations from Clark University in
1938.
Miss Hatt taught social studies in South Bend, Indiana for more than 40 years (1933-74)
with some breaks for outside service and travel. During World War II, for example, she
served in the American Red Cross Hospital Service in Europe. Additionally, Miss Hatt has
the distinction of receiving the first Fulbright Scholarship for travel to South Africa.
While there, she studied and lectured at teacher training colleges. Upon returning to
the United States she gave several talks about her experience in South Africa, which was
struggling with apartheid laws at the time. Miss Hatt retired from LaSalle High School
in 1974 and still resides in South Bend.
Miss Hatt has also deposited family papers at the Northern Indiana Center for History in
South Bend, where she is a trustee. The phone number for the Center is 574-235-9664.
In 2010, genealogist Janet McDougall Buchanan donated a photograph of Miss Hatt's
mother, Effie Shepley Hatt. Along with the photograph, she included this additional
genealogical information on the Hatt family:
Mary G. Hatt and brother James
S.H. Hatt (b. around 1900/1899 - some confusion [on the date] - and died 31 Mar 1962
in San Diego, CA) were the children of: James J. Hatt and Effie M. Shepley Hatt
(1874-1931). Effie was born to David (b. 1848) and Mary (b. 1850) Shepley (both born
in IN). Effie was born in MI, possibly Napolean.
Arrangement
Collection is divided into four series: Correspondence, Fulbright, Travel, and Personal
materials.
Scope and Content Note
The Mary Geraldine Hatt papers are organized into four series - Correspondence,
Fulbright, Travel and Personal.
The Correspondence series is further organized in three subseries - General, Indiana
University and Red Cross. The Indiana University series is by far the largest subseries
of the entire collection, consisting of .8 cubic feet, and includes the almost daily
correspondence of Miss Hatt with her parents during her freshman and sophomore years at
I.U. To date this is the largest collection of student correspondence the Archives holds
and provides a wonderful glimpse of student life during 1929-31. The Red Cross subseries
consists of Miss Hatt's correspondence during her World War II service. The files
consist almost entirely of letters Hatt sent to her father, James J. Hatt.
The second series, Fulbright, consists of materials relating to Miss Hatt's time in
South Africa as a Fulbright Scholar, 1953-54. It is further organized in four subseries
- Correspondence, Diaries, Reports, and Talks. Arranged chronologically, the Reports
subseries consists of almost diary-like daily reports of her experiences while traveling
throughout South Africa. The Talks subseries holds typescripts of talks Miss Hatt gave
to various organizations upon her return.
Arranged chronologically, the Travel series primarily holds travelogues or travel
diaries Miss Hatt kept during her frequent trips throughout the world and includes a
diary from her 1989 trip around the world in a private jet, a gift from friends and
family for her 78th birthday. When possible, the countries she visited are listed on the
folders, but because she often visited several places during her lengthy trips, the
folder may just indicate countries that were included in her trip.
The Personal series consists of odds and ends such as dance cards from her time at I.U.,
report cards, and various talks she gave. Also included are notes Miss Hatt kept for
herself about amusing answers she received from students on quizzes and exams such as
"The reason the French came to the New World was to learn to speak English."
