Abstract
The records of the Vice President for Administration, incumbent Edgar Williams, comprises 27.4 cubic feet and spans the years 1971-1988. The correspondence in the collection is largely between Williams and other IU administrators, including Bloomington Vice President Robert O'Neil and Assistant Vice President for Administration H. Glenn Ludlow. The Subject and Committee files series document the administrative duties and tasks undertaken by Williams and includes records on a great variety of subjects and programs, such as affirmative action, computing, regional campuses, personnel, and scholarships and financial aid.

Administrative History

Duties of Indiana University's Vice President for Administration included managing the budgets and accounts assigned specifically to the President and his office including payroll, planning and preparing the operating and capital budgets for the University, representing the University before various governmental agencies on budgetary matters, assisting in physical facilities planning and renovation, monitoring retention of academic and administrative personnel records, and reviewing and approving all requests for new administrative and professional positions system-wide.

Edgar Williams served as Vice President for Administration during the period from 1974-1987. During Williams' tenure, the Vice President for Administration planned, organized and directed the operation of several administrative units assigned to the Office of the President which had system-wide responsibilities for information services, budgetary services and a variety of managerial services.

Williams directly supervised the Assistant Vice President for Administration, the University Budget Officer, the Director of Management Information and Computer Services, Director of Internal Auditing, Director for University Security, Director for Long Range Planning, University Affirmative Action Officer and the University Archivist. Williams indirectly supervised the Director of Faculty Records, the University Registrar, the Director of Scholarships and Financial Aids and the Director of the Indiana University Press.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Vice President for Administration comprises 27.4 cubic feet and spans the years 1971-1988, with the bulk of the records from 1975-1987. The records are organized into 3 series: Correspondence files, Committee files and Subject files.

The Correspondence files are further organized into 2 subseries: General Correspondence and Correspondence arranged alphabetically by name of individual. The correspondence in this series is largely between Williams and other IU administrators. The general correspondence comprises 1.8 cubic feet, spans the years 1976-1987, and is arranged chronologically. The correspondence arranged alphabetically by name comprises 3.2 cubic feet. Correspondents prominently featured in this subseries include David Kramer, H. Glenn Ludlow, John Mulholland, Robert O'Neil and Thomas West.

The Committee files comprise 4 cubic feet, span the years 1973-1988, and are arranged alphabetically by committee name. The files document Williams' activities on various IU committees. Committees prominently featured in this series include Academic Program and Policy Committee, Agenda Committee, Coordinating Committee and Investment Committee.

The Subject Files comprise 19 cubic feet, span the years 1971-1987, and are arranged alphabetically by subject. The files document the administrative duties and tasks undertaken by Williams.
