Scope and Content Note
The numerous accessions brought together to form this collection had first to be sorted
by the positions John Ashton held at the university - Dean and Vice President of the
Division of Student and Educational Services (Collection C211), Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences (contact Archives staff), and Vice President for Graduate Development
and Dean of the Graduate School (Collection C212) - as the records had been all been
filed together. Consequently, it was impossible to discern the original organizational
scheme for the records. In most cases, the files retain their original folder title.
Exceptions to this are the files in the Correspondence series and some of the files in
the Administrative/Subject files series, which were either simply labeled as "John
Ashton" or identified by year. In these cases, a more descriptive folder heading was
created by the processor.
Restricted files are marked as such and placed at the end of the collection in Box
6.
The records of the Division of Student and Educational Services consists of
correspondence, research reports and proposals, committee meeting minutes, and memos
organized into six series: Administrative/Subject files; Research; Committees;
Correspondence; Conferences and meetings; and Papers and reports.
The Administrative/Subject files series is by far the largest series in the collection
comprising nearly 3 cubic feet. The files primarily consist of correspondence on the
named subject but also include memos, reports, and publications. Prominent subjects
include annual reports, the International Cooperation Administration (ICA), and
scholarships. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
The second series, Research, is further organized into three subseries: Correspondence,
Proposals and reports, and Subject files. The Correspondence subseries consist of
general correspondence regarding research and projects in which the university was
participating. Frequent correspondents include university professors and United States
agencies such as the United States Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare. The proposals
and reports subseries includes a wealth of information about research projects the
university and individual professors undertook. The Subject subseries includes quite a
bit of information on funding and on the Human Relations Area Files, Inc., an
organization founded in 1949 to focus on the field of cultural anthropology.
The Committees series is arranged alphabetically and consists of correspondence,
minutes, and notes from the various university and outside committees Ashton served on
or corresponded with. By far the most prominent committee is the Research Committee.
The fourth series, Correspondence, includes both incoming and outgoing correspondence of
the Division. More frequent correspondents were given their own folder, while others
were put in a general folder. Prominent correspondents include Professors Thomas Sebeok
and Carlton T. Hodge. The series is arranged alphabetically.
Conferences and meetings is a small series that contains information on conferences Dean
Ashton attended or helped organized. Included are five files on the Linguistic
Institute, which was sponsored annually by the Linguistic Society of America. It was
held at IU the summers of 1952 and 1953. The series is arranged alphabetically.
The final series, papers and reports, consists of just eight folders and contains
papers, reports, and publications pulled primarily from "Miscellaneous" files. Some of
the files include correspondence relating to the subject of the file. The folders are
arranged alphabetically.
Arrangement
Organized into six series: Administrative/Subject files; Research; Committees;
Correspondence; Conferences and meetings; and Papers and reports.
