Administrative History

Founded on 12 December 1947 by Mrs. Herman T. Briscoe, the purpose of Gateway (General Association of Teachers, Employees, Wives, Administrators of the Yooniversity) was to promote sociability among the members of the entire University family. Membership was available to all women who were employed in any capacity by the University, to wives and other homemakers of persons employed by the university, and to all retired persons and widows who were eligible at the time of their retirement or widowhood. Membership would be terminated by failure to pay dues or the termination of one’s association with the university.

Many Gateway meetings were centered on domesticity, with lessons on sewing, decorating, baking, and style. These “hobby” meetings were alternated with cultural meetings, which were generally led by professors at the university who lectured about their global travels and research. Each academic year was concluded with a Gateway picnic for members and their families.

The viability of Gateway was in question by April of 1962, as attendance at meetings had dwindled and as a core group of women dictated the club’s direction. The April 1962 minutes were the last recorded, though no formal dissolution is mentioned.

Arrangement

This collection has been organized into one series, Administrative files.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains one series arranged chronologically, Administrative files. Contained within this series are the Gateway Club minutes, the Presidents books, and a financial notice regarding the withdrawal of Gateway Club funds from the Indiana University Credit Union.

The Minutes span the entirety of the Gateway Club’s existence, 1947–1962, and are contained within one bound record book. Interesting entries include the initial inspiration for the founding of the Gateway Club, the initial efforts of Mrs. Herman T. Briscoe to arrange the group, and finally the internal complaints against the Gateway Club and the initial moves to disband the group.

The Presidents book is a valuable resource that contains materials from 1951 through 1962. Included are annual programs of events and meetings, lists of interest groups engaged within the Club, directories of the executive committees, membership lists from 1951 through 1962, the general guidelines of Gateway, and finally various newspaper clippings covering Gateway events.

The last folder contains a notice signed by Club officers requesting the withdrawal of Gateway Club’s Building fund from the Indiana University Credit Union in April of 1961.
