Biographical Note
Annie L. Butler was born in New Hope, Alabama, on September 21, 1920, to Mr. and Mrs.
George Butler. She had one sister and one brother. She attended Alabama College and
graduated in 1943 with a B.S. in Home Economics, and went on to attend State University
of Iowa, where she graduated with an M.A. in 1944. Butler worked as supervisor of St.
Cloud State College Nursery School and as Director of Nursery Schools at the University
of Alabama. She completed an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching Young Children in 1958 at
Teachers College, Columbia University. During her doctoral work at Columbia University,
Butler was the supervisor of nursery school, kindergarten, and primary student teachers
at Teachers College and Newark State College, Union, New Jersey. Following her
doctorate, she was appointed Associate in Child Development for the New York State
Education Department, Albany, New York.
Butler began teaching at Indiana University Bloomington in 1960, and remained for 19
years, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the School of Education. During
this time, she conducted seminars and workshops and was a guest professor at several
universities. A recognized expert in her field, she served as Professional Consultant
for the President's Committee on Health Education for Early Childhood Programs,
President of the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children, Secretary of
the National Committee on Early Childhood Education, and President of the Association
for Childhood Education International. Butler authored several books, including one
series she co-authored for the US Commission on Education titled
Literature Search and Development of an Evaluation System in
Early Childhood Education
. She was also a frequent speaker at professional meetings. Additionally, she
pursued two sabbaticals; the result of one, on the topic of futuristic early childhood
education, is included in this collection. Butler died on August 18, 1979, after a long
illness at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital. She is buried in New Hope, Alabama.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Professional, and
Publications.
Scope and Content Note
The Annie L. Butler papers span 1960-1979 and are arranged into three series:
Correspondence, Professional, and Publications.
The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically by the earliest date. Each folder
contains professional correspondence from publishers and project associates including
the Charles E. Merrill Publishing Company, the Field Foundation, the Grant Foundation,
and the Foundation for Child Development. Letters are arranged chronologically within
folders and span the years 1969-1979.
The Professional series is arranged chronologically and concerns the career of Butler at
Indiana University. Included are reports on her two Sabbatical leaves, dated 1969-1970
and 1975-1978, a report to the University concerning Butler's accomplishments and
undertakings during her tenure, dated 1976-1977, and a scholarly article that referenced
Butler's research, dated 1968.
The final series of the collection, Publications, is further organized into two
sub-series, Articles and presentations and Manuscripts. The Articles and presentations
sub-series is arranged alphabetically and contains Butler's shorter works of research,
such as the research article "Dealing with Intense Feelings: Children and
Crisis," as well as conference or guest-speaker presentations drawn from her
research, such as the presentation on the "Child's Bill of Rights" from
1973. Most articles and presentations are undated, but the two dated items range from
1973-1978. The Manuscripts sub-series is arranged chronologically, 1971-1973, and then
alphabetically for undated materials and contains Butler's larger studies and
co-authored reports. Included in this sub-series is the series Literature Search and
Development of an Evaluation System in Early Childhood Education which Butler
co-authored for the Commission on Education, as well as Butler's other early education
books such as
Play as Development and Early Childhood
Programs
.
