Abstract
Margaret I. Rufsvold came to Indiana
University in 1938 to help develop a library science curriculum. In 1947 she was asked
to serve as the director of the Division of Library Science, which was then part of the
School of Education. In 1966, she was named dean of the newly created Graduate Library
School, a position she held for two months before resigning from administrative duties.
Rufsvold retired with the title of Professor Emeritus in 1973. The Margaret I. Rufsvold
papers consist of correspondence, research files, reports, committee files, teaching
files, speeches, Rufsvold's records relating to positions held as a consultant, and
publications which document the professional activities of Rufsvold in state and
national organizations, as well as in organizations and departments relating to Indiana
University. Prominent in the collection are papers relating to her involvement with both
Indiana and national library organizations such as the Indiana Library Association, the
Indiana School Librarians Association, and the American Library Association. The ALA
files are varied, but her work on their Committee on Accreditation and the American
Association of School Librarians Committee are most prominent.

Biographical Note
Margaret Irene Rufsvold was born on August 18, 1907, in Calumet, Michigan. She earned an
AB in English and a Library Science Diploma in 1929 from University of Wisconsin and an
AM in Library Science in 1933 from the George Peabody College Library School. She came
to Indiana University in 1938 after holding librarian and library school positions in
several institutions. She was very active in professional organizations, served as a
member of many commissions, and traveled throughout the world as a consultant and to
gather information on library programs.
In 1966, Rufsvold was named the first dean of the Indiana University Graduate Library
School (later renamed the School of Library and Information Science). Prior to becoming
dean, she had been the Director of the Division of Library Science in the School of
Education (the predecessor of the Graduate Library School) since 1947. She resigned from
her administrative duties two months later, but continued teaching and was given the
title Professor Emeritus in 1973.
Arrangement
The collection is organized into eleven series: Biographical; Graduate Library School;
Consultantships; Teaching; School of Education; Indiana library associations; American
Library Association; National organizations; Research and grant proposals; Publications;
and Speeches and Papers. The Research and grant proposals series is further organized
into three sub-series: USOE bibliographic research project; USOE proposals written by
Margaret Rufsvold; and Other research by MIR (Margaret Irene Rufsvold).
Scope and Content Note
The Margaret Rufsvold papers document the professional activities of Rufsvold in state
and national organizations, as well as in organizations and departments relating to
Indiana University. The papers are organized into eleven series: Biographical; Graduate
Library School; Consultantships; Teaching; School of Education; Indiana library
associations; American Library Association; National Organizations; Research and grant
proposals; Publications; and Speeches. The Research and grant proposals series contains
three sub-series: USOE bibliographic research project; USOE proposals written by
Margaret Rufsvold; and Other research by MIR (Margaret Irene Rufsvold).
The first series is entitled Biographical. This series contains personal information
from resumes, clippings, and correspondence. It also includes letters of commendation
and honors won. The series span the years 1936-1973.
The next series, Graduate Library School, is arranged alphabetically and contains
Rufsvold’s faculty annual reports from 1966-1971, as well as her faculty annual reports
from when the Division of Library Science was in the School of Education, 1940-1965. The
series spans 1940-1971 and also contains information on committees on which Rufsvold
served and conferences she attended.
Consultantships, 1949-1974, is the next series. It is arranged alphabetically and
consists of surveys and studies that Rufsvold worked on for other institutions. Among
these were several universities: Atlanta University, Kansas State Teachers College, and
University of Michigan. She also did work for the USOE (United States Office of
Education) and several public and private libraries.
The fourth series, Teaching, spans 1951-1973, and consists of files on courses Rufsvold
taught in the library school, guest lectures, and sabbatical proposals. The folders
pertaining to the classes she taught are labeled by both class number and class title.
There are four files pertaining to guest lectures included in the records. These
lecturers are; Slovodan Jovanovic; Anton Schreiegg; Charuvarn Sindusopon; and
Zalvorniki-Subotin.
The School of Education series contains administrative files of Rufsvold’s from before
DLS became part of the Graduate School and was still in the School of Education. This
series contains materials from 1951-1966. The records are mostly concerned with the
committees that Rufsvold participated in during this time, most of which were
organizational and promotional committees for DLS. The series also includes National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) evaluation committees.
The next series, Indiana library associations, consists of files on library and school
associations in Indiana including the Indiana Library Association, Indiana School
Librarians Association, and the Indiana School Library Training Council. Rufsvold
participated in all of these associations at one time or another. The records in this
series span 1940-1972.
The American Library Association (ALA) series documents Rufsvold's involvement in that
organization and the various committees she served on between 1946 and 1972. Notable
were her roles as second Vice president of the ALA from 1957-1958, as a member of the
Accreditation Committee for several years, and as winner of the 1956 Phi Beta Mu Award,
which is awarded annually to a library school faculty member in recognition of
distinguished service in library education.
The series of Research and grant proposals consists of different projects worked on by
Rufsvold, published and unpublished, and grant proposals written, both funded and not
funded. The series is further organized into three sub-series. The first is United
States Office of Education (USOE) bibliographic research project dating 1959-1968. The
project was intended to study the methods in which teachers received information about
new books and materials. This sub-series includes a bound report, several unbound
reports, budgets, the original proposal, and correspondence between the persons
involved. The next sub-series is USOE proposals written by Margaret Rufsvold. This
sub-series includes both funded and unfunded proposals written to the USOE over the
years 1966-1973. The last sub-series is entitled Other research by MIR (Margaret Irene
Rufsvold). This series includes speeches, reports, and projects that include a World
book project and a study of the status of school librarians in Indiana. The last
sub-series spans the years 1929-1972.
The Speeches and papers series contains materials from 1933-1977. It is arranged in
chronological order and consists of speeches, newsletters, and correspondence about
named publications and guides. Included in this series are class notes that Rufsvold
wrote for some of her classes.
The next series, Publications, is arranged chronologically. The publications were all
written by Rufsvold, though some were co-authored with other scholars. The publications
span the period from 1938-1971.
