Rudy Pozzatti was born in Telluride, Colorado in 1925. After high school he spent
three years in military service, and by 1950 received his BFA and MFA from the
University of Colorado. Pozzatti taught at the University of Nebraska and received a
Fulbright Award in 1952, and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1953 before coming to
Indiana University as an assistant professor of drawing & painting in 1956.
Committed to developing creative arts on campus, Pozzatti was named a distinguished
professor in 1972. He was invited to be the artist in residence several times
including time spent at the Roswell Museum & Art Center in New Mexico. He has
won more than 50 awards for his work and is recognized as one of the country's
leading printmakers. Pozzatti's work is displayed in several permanent collections
around the world including the White House. In 1979, Pozzatti helped to found Echo
Press in Bloomington, a well respected printmaking workshop which provided IU
students and local artists with valuable experience. Professor Pozzatti retired from
teaching in 1991 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus and continued to serve as
Director of the Echo Press until its close in 1994.
The collection is organized into six series: Records about Pozzatti; Art work,
photos, and publications by Pozzatti; Correspondence files; Show and exhibition
catalogues; Photographic prints and negatives of Pozzatti's art work; and Plates,
woodblocks and matboards.
The Rudy Pozzatti papers span the years from 1951 to 2011 and comprise 12 cubic feet.
The papers are organized into five series: Records about Pozzatti; Art work, photos,
and publications by Pozzatti; Correspondence files; Show and exhibition material;
and Photographic prints and negatives of Pozzatti's art work. Many of the records
and correspondence pieces are annotated by Pozzatti. There are no files related to
his teaching.
The Records about Pozzatti series spans the period from 1954 to 2011 and consist
largely of newspaper clippings and articles about Pozzatti and his work. Also
included in this series are Norman Geske's book
Rudy Pozzatti.
American Printmaker,
transcripts of two interviews done with Pozzatti, a
student paper on Pozzatti, and awards or citations Pozzatti received. Also included
is a folder of papers Pozzatti gathered on his colleagues throughout the years.
The Artwork, photos, and publications by Pozzatti is a small series of records
spanning 1961 to 1992. Noteworthy is an original etching by Pozzatti of a birth
announcement for his daughter Mia. Other records in the series include a “diagram of
wood and metal sections” created by Pozzatti for the Indianapolis PSI Mural
Competition, photographs taken by Pozzatti while in Lincoln, Nebraska, two articles
by Pozzatti, and his preface to a booklet on the IU School of Fine Arts.
The Correspondence files series is the largest in the collection. The records span
the period from 1951 to 2010, and are arranged alphabetically by name of institution
or individual. The series consists of seven general categories of correspondence:
Correspondence with galleries and museums regarding exhibitions and competitions;
Correspondence with universities or colleges regarding teaching, workshops, or
exhibits; Correspondence regarding grant funded travel to exhibit or create art,
conduct workshops, or attend conferences; Correspondence relating to publications
about Pozzatti or publications containing his art; Correspondence relating to
Pozzatti's professional activities as member of national boards or committees;
Correspondence relating to Pozzatti's life and work at Indiana University including
his committee work, interaction with the School of Fine Arts faculty and students,
letters of recommendation, faculty reports, and Echo Press activities; Personal
correspondence with professional colleagues, former students, and buyers of his
art.
The Show and exhibition materials are arranged alphabetically by institution or
gallery where the event took place. The records consist of sheets, brochures,
booklets or catalogs in a variety of sizes. Some materials contain illustrations or
pictures of Pozzatti's work. The records document shows or exhibits in which
Pozzatti participated, though most were undated.
The Photographic prints and negatives of Pozzatti's art work consist largely of
undated material, and is arranged alphabetically by the name of the work. Most of
the pieces are in black and white, and about one-third are mounted on mat board.
Some of the records are annotated by Pozzatti.
The Plates, woodblocks and matboards are largely undated and have been arranged
alphabetically. When available dates are included.
Duplicate materials returned to Pozzatti. 24 images transferred to Archives
Photographs Collection. Contact Photographs Curator for details.
