In 1942 in response to wartime conditions, Indiana University established the Junior
Division to ensure that returning veterans would be able to come back to IU with an
identifiable amount of academic work completed. The Division also fulfilled
requirements for entrance into the "Upper Division,"
where students would study within their majors. The emphasis on academics within the
Junior Division was clear as it was also intended to provide standardized entrance
requirements as well as guidance and counseling to freshman students during their
first year to enable them to achieve maximum success in the transition from high
school to college.
In 1970, the Junior Division was officially expanded and renamed "University Division," as it no longer served solely
the freshmen, but became a two year program for entering students who had not
selected a major. The University Division expanded the services of the earlier
Division, with the introduction of a decentralized, residency based system of
academic advising. In doing so, the University Division expanded upon IUB’s
commitment to provide students with the support they needed to successful adjust to
college life, and as such, extended its services to sophomore students,
acknowledging that some students need additional support and time to determine their
preferred area of study.
Currently, the University Division serves the majority of undergraduate students
entering the University. Students remain in the University Division until they have
completed basic requirements and certify into a degree granting major or school. The
University Division provides a variety of services including academic advising,
exploratory student resources, a Health Professions and Prelaw Center, as well as
the Student Academic Center.
The collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and
Publications.
Records in this collection date from the tenure of Sally Dunn, who served as acting
dean of the Division from 2000-2001 and dean from 2001-2007.
The University Division Dean’s records are organized into two series. The first
series, Administrative files (1942-2007), is arranged alphabetically and includes a
wide range of materials, including files on general programming activities, academic
advising, the migration to Peoplesoft/SIS, freshman entrance and retention, and the
history of University Division, as well as annual reports, budgets, and policies and
procedures. Additionally, there are files related to committees on which Dean Dunn
served and participated.
The second series, Publications (1986-2008) is arranged alphabetically and includes
materials used in academic advising such as course planners, course descriptions,
and student advising handouts and packets.
Materials relating to student grades were removed and destroyed.
