Biographical Note

Wayne County, Indiana resident Pauline Montgomery (1903-1982) spent most of her life as a Latin and English teacher. She was a graduate of Indiana University and was deeply dedicated to education. Her devotion to Indiana history led her to write and publish the book titled Indiana Coverlet Weavers and Their Coverlets in 1974. Pauline Montgomery and her husband, Robert Montgomery, also founded the Upper Whitewater Historical Association in 1962, which is committed to the history the eastern counties in Indiana. At the time of her death in 1982, she had also been a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Montgomery bequeathed her collection of approximately sixteen-hundred photos and negatives of Indiana tombstones and the accompanying ledger of descriptive records to the Indiana University Folklore Department. The collection was transferred to the Indiana University Folklore Department upon her death in 1982.

Arrangement

Organized into three series: Ledgers and will, Prints, and Negatives.

Scope and Content Note

The Pauline Montgomery Indiana tombstone photographs and records contains sixteen-hundred photographs and corresponding negatives of grave monuments in predominately eastern Indiana. This collection contains three series: Ledgers and will, Prints, and Negatives. With the exception of the will, all material dates to the 1960s.

The first series, Ledgers and will, contains Montgomery’s will, which bequeathed the records to the Folklore Department and two ledgers. The ledgers document the photograph number, location and description of the monument, and the date the monument was placed. These two ledgers provide valuable contextual information about the photographs in the collection.

The second series, Prints, contains the sixteen-hundred photographs taken by Montgomery. Each photograph is numbered to correspond with a ledger entry describing the monument, the location and the date placed.

The third series, Negatives, contains the corresponding negatives to the photographs in the collection. This series does not contain a negative for every photograph in the collection, however.
