Abstract
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is a nationwide organization established in 1915, and is open to membership by faculty, librarians, and academic professionals at accredited public and private colleges and universities. Its mission is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define professional values and standards within higher education, and to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good. There is evidence that the Indiana University Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors was active on campus as early as 1916 and remains active to the present. The collection consists of group publications, minutes, notes, correspondence, and other related materials.

Access Restrictions

Several records containing restricted information related to tenure review cases and grievances were removed from an Executive Committee file (1990-1991) and a General file (1993-1994). These records are closed to researchers. Other documents with sensitive information were photocopied and confidential information was redacted (Committee A activity details); these photocopies were filed back into the appropriate folders and the originals are filed with restricted materials at the end of the collection.

Administrative History

There is evidence that the Indiana University Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors was active on campus as early as 1916, and it remains active to the present. The organization maintains communication with other AAUP chapters through state and national meetings and correspondence. It also facilitates discussions with state governmental leaders to provide a faculty voice on legislative issues facing higher education in Indiana.

Prominent issues of discussion and policy-making relevant to the IUB AAUP chapter as well as the larger national body include professional principles, salary policies, promotions, pensions and insurance, economic welfare, and academic rights. The Bloomington group includes various committees, including but not limited to: Executive Committee, Fringe Benefits Committee, Rules Committee, Library Committee, and Committee A—which advises and advocates for faculty colleagues and graduate students who claim violation of their academic rights.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into a single series: Subject files.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Indiana University, Bloomington chapter of the American Association of University Professors span the years 1929-1941, 1971, and 1983-2010; the bulk of the collection is concentrated in the years from 1983-2003. Records are organized into a single series: Subject files. Within the series, files are organized alphabetically by topic. When multiple folders exist on the same subject, they are arranged chronologically. The portion of materials spanning the collection’s early coverage dates 1929-1941 and is concentrated into three General files. Included in these files are correspondence, chapter letters, meeting information, member lists, questionnaires, reports, and various mailings from the AAUP’s National Office in Washington, DC.

An isolated portion of the collection from 1971 on the "Study on the Status of Women Faculty at Indiana University, Bloomington Campus" includes a report in regards to a formal study of women faculty as undertaken by the AAUP.

The remainder of the collection (1983-2010) includes a number of topical files along with general materials comprising agendas, minutes, reports, conference materials, membership solicitations and applications, rosters, news clippings, articles, monetary balances, correspondence, notes, and formal publications. Localized AAUP Indiana University Bloomington publications predominantly include AAUP News and FPA Speaks Out; AAUP Indiana State publications predominantly include Indiana Academe and On Campus; AAUP national publications include AAUP Legislative News, Footnotes, and Updates. Additional publications appear infrequently dispersed in the collection.
