Biographical Note

Born in Markle, Indiana on February 12, 1905, Newell Long earned a B.A. from Indiana University (1928), a Master of Science in Music Education from Northwestern University (1934), a Master of Arts in Music Composition from Indiana University (1939), and an Ed.D., also from IU, in 1965. He was a member of the Indiana University School of Music faculty from 1935 until 1975, including the period 1957-1964 as the Associate Conductor of Bands. Long also held administrative roles at the university, serving as the first assistant dean of the music education department as well as the chair of the undergraduate division of music education. An avid composer, he wrote 86 compositions and arrangements and published 26. His teaching career included courses at both the secondary and the university level, including classes on trombone, composition, and teaching high music.

In 1934, Newell married Eleanor Rice who is known today as the founder of Girls Inc of Monroe County. She was born on May 8, 1905 in Chicago. Earning her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1926, she eventually went on to teach English at Indiana University from 1939 to 1962. Over the course of their marriage, Newell and Eleanor wrote a number of pageant scores, musical plays, and skits, with Newell writing the musical scores and Eleanor composing the scripts. Notable shows include "Corydon, the Cradle of Our Commonwealth," for the 150th anniversary of Indiana’s statehood and "Gloriana, Indiana," for the 150th anniversary of Indiana University. Inspired by her research for the "Corydon" pageant, in 1981 Eleanor Long published a children’s book entitled Wilderness to Washington , a fictional account of the first governor of Indiana and his wife’s journey to Washington, D.C. in the early 1800s.

Newell Long died in Bloomington, Indiana on January 4, 1999 and was followed by his wife on April 21, 2006. They had one son, Edward M. Long.
