Abstract
The Newcomer’s Club was established at Indiana University under the University Women’s Club. The goal of the club was to organize and implement social and cultural events for members. In 1959 the group became part of a new organization called the University Club, which acted as an umbrella organization for four smaller Indiana University clubs, including the Newcomer’s Club. The collection consists of meeting minutes, and subject files.

Administrative History

The Newcomer’s Club was established at Indiana University under the University Women’s Club, but was incorporated into the University Club in 1959 along with three other older Indiana University clubs, including (1) the University Women's Club (originally titled the Faculty Women's Club when first established in 1913, renamed in 1959), (2) the Women's Faculty Club (established in 1923), and (3) the Men's Faculty Club (established in 1912). From 1959 until 1988, the University Club acted as an umbrella organization for the four separate clubs it contained, with each individual club pursuing its own programs, as well as adding on University Club programs open to all members of the University Club. Starting in 1989, however, all programs enacted by the four separate clubs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club regardless of what individual club the member officially belongs to.

The Newcomer’s Club organizes both social and educational events and activities, including dinners, dances, picnics, theater and opera parties, lectures, and receptions for distinguished visitors to the campus. Membership in the Club is limited to those newly arrived at Indiana University. After being a member, a newcomer will belong to both the Newcomer’s Club and the University Women’s club. This means that newcomers will be able to join programs, such as the Circulating Book Group, the Book Review Group, the Bridge Group, the Stitch and Chat Group, the Hiking Group, the Music Study Group, and the Garden Study Group.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and Scrapbooks.

Scope and Content Note

The Newcomer’s Club records span the period from 1932-1985, and are arranged into two series: Administrative files and Scrapbooks.

The first series, Administrative files, span the period from 1932-1982, and consist of presidents’ annual reports, programs and budgets, correspondence, membership information, job descriptions, recommendations and constitutions. The records in this series are arranged alphabetically.

The second series consists of two scrapbooks on the Newcomer’s Club activities that primarily contain photographs and news articles on the various social activities that the Newcomer’s Club planned and held.
