The not-for-profit group Beyond the Pale Productions was founded in 1998 to promote avant-garde and improvisational jazz in the Bloomington, Indiana area. This collection includes includes press releases, newspaper clippings and flyers announcing upcoming concerts as well as background information on individual artists.

Administrative History

Beyond the Pale Productions was founded in 1998 by Shane Graham, Jason Bivins and Jessica Baldanzi. The goal of the not-for-profit group was to promote avant-garde and improvisational jazz in the Bloomington area. Performers hosted included the Vandermark 5, Peter Brötzmann, Matt Darriau’s Paradox Trio, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Joan Jeanrenaud, Miya Masaoka, and Larry Ochs. Beyond the Pale also staged an avant-garde puppet theater show by musicians and puppeteers Blair Thomas and Michael Zerang on the Indiana University campus and in 2001, it hosted a series of seven short films by early French cinematographer Georges Méliès, featuring a live performance of an original score by Phillip Johnston’s Transparent Quartet. The group disbanded some time in 2003.

Scope and Content Note

The records of Beyond the Pale Productions are organized into one series, Subject files. The series includes press releases, newspaper clippings and flyers announcing upcoming concerts as well as background information on individual artists. Three music CDs of performances hosted by Beyond the Pale, by such artists as Larry Ochs, Josh Abrams, and Rob Mazurek, are also included in the collection.
