Administrative History

The Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife was first held in 1967. This festival brings together craftspeople, musicians, dancers, and other folk artists from every region of the United States and from scores of American ethnic communities. The 1987 festival was attended and documented by students in the Indiana University Folklore Department. Students photographed and recorded (video and audio) presentations at the 1987 festival. The theme of the 1987 festival was Cultural Conservation and Languages: America's Many Voices, with the Appalachian, Chinese-American, Lao-American, and Mexican-American communities highlighted. The festival was held in Washington D.C. and in the state of Michigan.

This collection contains research about past festivals and how to participate in future festivals. The research about past festivals includes past programs, news clippings, and publications offered by the Smithsonian. Student reports comprise the bulk of this collection. The reports consist of written reports, photograph collections, and audio and visual recordings. Each report focuses on one type of presentation presented at the festival, such as a Yemini dance group or tales from Great Lakes fisherman.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into three series: Project Participation Research, Festival History, and Student Projects. Student Projects contains four sub-series; Reports, Photographs, Audio Cassettes, and Video Cassettes.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is organized into three series: Project Participation Research, Festival History, and Student Projects. Student Projects contain four sub-series; Reports, Photographs, Audio Cassettes, and Video Cassettes.

The first series, Project Participation Research, contains information about how to participate in the 1987 festival. This series contains the application for participation, background research, correspondence, and the presenter and participant handbooks.

The second series, Festival History, contains research about past Smithsonian Festivals of American Folklife. Programs for past festivals (1974-1987), news clipping about the 1986 festival, and the 1987 Festival of American Folklife Publicity Report are contained within this series.

The third series, Student Projects, comprise the bulk of the overall collection. This series has four sub-series; Reports, Photographs, Audio Cassettes, and Video Cassettes, which represent the methods in which students captured and reported on specific presentations at the festival and other folklore events.
