Abstract
The School of Journalism had its beginnings at Indiana University when the first journalism course was offered in 1891. A Department of Journalism was established in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911, and in 1974 the department became the School of Journalism. The School of Journalism has had many well-known and successful graduates, including the famous World War II journalist Ernie Pyle. This collection consists of records of the Department/School of Journalism collected and compiled by Marjorie Blewett, an administrative assistant in Journalism from 1965-1980 and placement director from 1980-1990. The records within the collection consist largely of the correspondence and other administrative files generated by the directors or deans of the Department/School of Journalism. The majority of the records were generated by or sent to John Stempel and Richard Gray during the years 1938-1984, but Marjorie Blewett also contributes some her own personal records.

Access Restrictions

At this time, the Faculty meeting minutes series is restricted. Advanced notice required for access to the collection.

Administrative History

Journalism had its official beginnings at Indiana University when the first course was offered in 1891. Nearly two decades later, in 1911, Journalism was added to the curriculum of the College and Arts and Sciences. Beginning in 1916, Journalism offered a master's degree, but a bachelor's degree was not offered until 1932 because journalism was thought be a professional degree, not academic.

Josephe Piercy served as the first Director of journalism, a position he held from 1911-1938. He was succeeded by John Stempel, who held this position until 1968. In 1954 the former Stores and Services Building became the new publications-journalism building, and was dedicated as Ernie Pyle Hall, in honor of the famous journalist and alumnus of the University who died while reporting on WWII. Also during Stempel’s tenure, the High School Journalism Institute was created in 1946, directed by Gretchen Kemp. The Department of Journalism offered its first PhD in mass communications in 1966.

Richard Gray was put at the helm of Journalism in 1968. During his tenure, the Indiana Daily Student became an operation independent of the department, and Ernie Pyle Hall was remodeled in 1976 to provide for a modern, technological environment for research and teaching in journalism. The department became a school in 1974, with Gray as director. In 1982, Journalism became a system-wide school, responsible for the coordination of journalism education on all eight campuses of Indiana University. Gray became dean and presided over the founding of an undergraduate major at IUPUI in an independent School of Journalism. Before 1974, journalism courses had been taught at Indianapolis in the Department of English, mainly by professor Shirley Quate, who also advised the student-run campus newspaper, The Sagamore, which first appeared in 1971. The school took over administration of The Sagamore, appointing its first publisher in 1985. In 1984, Gray died, and Trevor Brown was appointed Dean.

Arrangement

Collection organized into 13 series: Correspondence, Alumni, Awards, Committees, Curriculum, Enrollment, Ernie Pyle Hall, Events, Faculty, Publications, Subject files, Syllabi, and Faculty meeting minutes.

Scope and Content Note

The School of Journalism collection consists primarily of records of the Department/School of Journalism collected and compiled by Marjorie Blewett, an administrative assistant in Journalism from 1965-1980 and placement director from 1980-1990. Upon her retirement, Blewett took these records home with the intent of writing a history of the School. The records within the collection consist largely of the correspondence and other administrative files generated by the directors or deans of the Department/School of Journalism. The majority of the records were generated by or sent to John Stempel and Richard Gray during the years 1938-1984, but Marjorie Blewett also contributes some of her own personal records.

This collection is arranged into 13 series: Correspondence, Alumni, Awards, Committees, Curriculum, Enrollment, Ernie Pyle Hall, Events, Faculty, Publications, Subject files, Syllabi, and Faculty meeting minutes.

The first series, Correspondence, spans 1923-1990 and consists of general incoming and outgoing correspondence with school administrators, primarily John Stempel and Richard Gray. Some notable correspondents are Kent Cooper, Basil Walters, and John W. Ashton. The most prominent subjects are of an administrative nature dealing with Journalism faculty or issues in the School of Journalism.

Alumni, the second series, spans 1958-1995 and consists of records by or about alumni and events for alumni of the School of Journalism. The majority of the records in this series relate to the Journalism Alumni Association and the Journalism Alumni Day event. Also included are memories and statements by alumni about their experiences in the School of Journalism, such as David Richardson of U.S. News and World Report and former Oregon State Senator Glen Stadler.

The third series, Awards, spans 1955-1990 and includes files on various awards, fellowships, professorships, and scholarships awarded through the School of Journalism and its affiliates. Affiliates include the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and the IU chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. These files consist of correspondence, articles, and clippings related to the awards and their recipients. Prominent among the awards are the Chris Savage Memorial Award and the Roy Howard Professorship. Distinguished winners of these awards include Andrew Schneider, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner from the Pittsburg Press, who was awarded the Riley Chair of Journalism in 1989-1990; and, David A. Weaver, former president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, who was awarded the first Roy W. Howard professorship in 1988.

Committees, the fourth series, spans 1954-1989 and consists of records of different committees and boards that existed within the School of Journalism throughout its history during this time period. Prominent in this series are the records of the search committees for a department chair, 1965-1968, and dean, 1985. It should also be noted that the folder labeled “Heffner Committee” are actually records of the Committee on Academic Programs in Communications, but this committee was later known by the name "Heffner Committee" because it was headed by Hubert Heffner, professor from the Department of Theatre and Drama. This same is true for the Siffin Committee records. The "Turning Point" meeting minutes are minutes of the School of Journalism faculty that were watershed or landmark moments in the history of the school, including the meeting after the death of Dean Richard Gray.

The fifth series, Curriculum, spans 1922-1989 and consists of records relating to curriculum proposals and changes, as well as files on specific courses taught in the School of Journalism. The curriculum documented in this series includes both graduate and undergraduate level courses. Prominent in this series are folders that include curriculum changes and corrections to the university catalogs and bulletins from 1969-1988. Another item of interest is a folder of correspondence from the 1920’s between Journalism administrators and newspaper managers concerning the instruction on advertising in Journalism schools. See also the Syllabi series.

Enrollment, the sixth series, spans 1934-1987 and consists mostly of statistics and figures of students enrolled in the School of Journalism. Also included are statistics related to Journalism faculty and minority students. The most prominent records in this series are three folders that document enrollment figures from 1934-1973.

The seventh series, Ernie Pyle Hall, spans 1954-1981 and consists mostly of records on the dedication and remodeling of the building that houses the School of Journalism. Among the records on the dedication of the building are letters to and from invitees, the guest book, and copies of speeches for the event. Included in the correspondence for the dedication are letters from family members of Ernie Pyle. Also in this series is a folder on an energy and power crisis that the building faced in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s following the remodeling.

The eighth series, Events, spans 1927-1992 and consists of records that document conferences, lectures, parties, speeches, seminars and other events held at the School of Journalism or attended by Journalism faculty. Items of interest in this series include correspondence and clippings on the Pulliam Lecture Series and a lecture by Russell Tornabene on Ernie Pyle.

Faculty, the ninth series, spans 1923-1995 and consists of files on several prominent faculty members that include mostly records of such topics as nominations for awards and their retirement. Faculty members included range from Joseph Piercy, first chair of the Department of Journalism in 1911, to Richard Gray, former dean of the School of Journalism into the 1980’s. Prominent within this series are files on Richard Gray and John Stempel. Several speeches by Richard Gray are included, as well as correspondence regarding his death. John Stempel’s files include his memories of journalism during World War II and clippings from his tenure as chair of the department as well as his obituary and memoriam.

The tenth series, Publications, spans 1911-1988, and is further arranged into two sub-series: Arbutus, the university yearbook, and Indiana Daily Student (IDS), the student newspaper. Records for the Arbutus yearbook span 1953-1982 and include mostly administrative records such as board meeting notes and correspondence, the organization’s charter, as well as a file on the reorganization of the Arbutus. The Indiana Daily Student sub-series spans 1911-1988 and consists of records both about and produced by the paper. Prominent in this sub-series are criticisms of the IDS written by John Stempel, 1938-1962, and several folders of transcripts of memories written by editors of the IDS from before the 1920’s to the 1970’s. There are also several folders detailing the proposal for the IDS to become independent from the School of Journalism in 1969.

Subject files, the eleventh series, spans 1946-1993 and includes files on various subjects that document the history of the School of Journalism. Subjects include ratings and rankings of the School of Journalism, the grading system, journalism being taught throughout the IU system, and the school leaving the College of Arts and Sciences. Prominent in this series are several files related to the coverage of different events by the IDS and other newspapers in the region, as well as pages from what was labeled as the “Student Humor” file kept by John Stempel. This file consists of various items created by Journalism students over several decades, ca. 1938-1968, including scripts of skits written for the "Swing In Swing Out" parties and humorous poetry and inside jokes on the different aspects of being a Journalism student. This file was compiled into a binder by Marjorie Blewett and presented to John Stempel in 1968. The "Stempeliana" folder was created by Blewett to include various anecdotal records on John Stempel, including information on his retirement party.

The next series, Syllabi, was added to the collection in 2011 and consists of course syllabi spanning 1953 thru spring 2008. Each semester has its own folder and the series is arranged chronologically.

The final series, Faculty meeting minutes, was also added to the collection in 2011. Arranged chronologically, the minutes span 1940 through spring 2000, with 1965 thru 1967 being the only years not represented. Due to frequent discussions regarding faculty searches, this series is restricted. Researchers requesting access to this series must notify Archives staff at least 1 week in advance to afford staff sufficient time to review the records for confidential information.

Provenance
The bulk of this collection was picked up at the home of Marjorie Blewett who retired in 1990 as Director of Placement in the School of Journalism. She had worked for Journalism since 1965, where she had been an administrative assistant prior to becoming placement director in 1980. She collected the material over a period of many years and took it home when she retired, intending to write a history of the School and the IDS. Most of the records were created by Blewett or were collected as result of her various jobs with the School of Journalism.

The syllabi and faculty meeting minutes were transferred to the Archives from the School in 2005, 2007, and 2008.
