Biographical Note
John R. Krueger was born on March 14, 1927 in Fremont, Nebraska. His family moved to
Washington, D.C. in 1940, where he soon developed an interest in languages. After
working for the Federal Civil Service, Krueger received his B.A. from George
Washington University, spending time in Denmark on a Fulbright Scholarship. He
received his PhD in Mongolian from the University of Washington in 1960, and taught
German there and at Reed College in Oregon during his studies. After a brief stint
teaching Asian languages at the University of California Berkeley he joined the
department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington in 1962.
There he taught Turkic and Mongolian languages until his retirement in 1985.
Dr. Krueger was an active writer, editor and translator of works in Central Asian
languages. During his career he published dozens of articles, linguistic studies,
and reviews. He contributed to major dictionaries in Mongolian languages and also
provided subject articles to a variety of encyclopedias. He was an active member of
the Mongolia Society throughout his life, and continued to do editorial work long
into his retirement.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into two series: Correspondence and Writings.
Scope and Content Note
The collection is divided into two series: Correspondence, (1952-2011), and Writings,
(1952-2005). The first series, Correspondence, is arranged alphabetically by primary
correspondent, although multiple correspondents are sometimes present in the same
folder. There are also a limited number of folders named for an entity or project,
such as with the folder labeled “Toltran.” In those cases numerous correspondents
may be present, but the subject matter of the letters centers on one common theme.
The correspondence is principally professional in nature, often dealing with various
publications, research, and professional development. Correspondence of a personal
nature, often with former colleagues, is also sprinkled throughout the series.
Letters are primarily in English, with some Russian, German, Mongolian and Chinese
present. Material relating to professional reviews of others, student work, or the
personal lives of individuals has been restricted and has been indicated as such in
the folder list. Various photographs have been transferred to the University
Archives Photo Collection. Contact the Archives Curator of Photographs for
access.
The second series, Writings, is comprised of academic papers and publications
written, edited or translated by Krueger, as well as correspondence relating to
those works. The folders are arranged chronologically by the earliest date of the
material contained within. Included in this series are dozens of reviews written for
linguistics and Central Asian journals, as well as many works written in conjunction
with Krueger’s participation in the Mongolia Society. The series also includes a
bibliography of Krueger’s work, edited by William Rozycki in 2001.
