Abstract
The Water Resources Research Center was established in 1963 with the goal of integrating the diverse water research activities of Indiana University and coordinating them with the water programs of state and federal agencies, other academic institutions and private organizations. The Center’s research, cooperation with other water resources organizations, and its administration are represented in the contents of this collection.

Access Restrictions

Collection is open for research. Advance notice required.

Administrative History

The Water Resources Research Center was created in 1963. One of the many goals of the center was to broadly examine the water research activities being undertaken by the numerous disciplines, departments, and individual researchers on the Indiana University campuses. Additionally, the Center provided research opportunities for the newly established doctoral program in hydrogeology. The main focus was on water issues peculiar to the Midwest.

The Center was initially directed by Allen F. Agnew. Professor of geology, R.V. Ruhe, assumed this position in 1970. While in operation, the Center worked with federal organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization (NOAA) on national research projects, while also doing research locally on water systems such as Bloomington’s Lake Monroe. The Water Resources Research Center closed in 1985.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into four series: Research projects, Reports, Correspondence, and Administrative files. The Reports series has two sub-series: Project completion reports and General. The Administrative series has two sub-series: General and Joint-Council.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials that document the activities of the Water Resources Research Center. The records span from 1937-1986 with the bulk of materials concentrated between the years of 1963-1986. This collection is organized into four series: Research projects, Reports, Correspondence, and Administrative.

The first series, Research projects (1937-1986), is arranged alphabetically by project title. This series is comprised of materials that relate to both accepted and rejected research projects. Although the records for each project vary, common items within this series include research proposals, budgets, expense reports, and project-specific correspondence.

The second series, Reports (1964-1985), is further organized into two sub-series: Project completion reports (1965-1983) and General (1964-1985). The Project completion reports are arranged chronologically by date of publication. Many of these completion reports correspond to a research project found in the Research projects series and are essentially a final, bound write-up of research finding. Reports in the General sub-series are arranged by subject and then by date, with reports pertaining to radiation testing first, followed by annual reports of the Water Resources Research Center.

The third series, Correspondence (1965-1984), is arranged alphabetically by folder title. This series largely consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence from Robert V. Ruhe, who was the longest serving director of the Water Resources Research Center.

The fourth and final series, Administrative (1961-1985), is further organized into two sub-series: General (1963-1985) and Joint Council (1961-1984). The General sub-series is arranged alphabetically and contains information pertaining to a variety of administrative items including graduate student fee-remissions, budgets, and personnel. The Joint Council sub-series contains information related to the partnership between the Water Resources Research Centers of Indiana University and Purdue University.

Related Material

Items pertaining to Robert V. Ruhe’s personal research, correspondence, and courses were pulled from this collection and can be found in the Robert V. Ruhe papers, Collection C445.

Additional records such as newsletters, annual reports, bulletins, and publications may be accessed in the Archives of Institutional Memory
