Biographical Note

Orah Cole Briscoe, born 1907, was an Indiana University alumna, earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1929 and her Master of Arts in English in 1934. As an undergraduate she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. In 1928 she married Herman T. Briscoe, a distinguished chemistry educator who joined the Indiana University chemistry faculty in 1924, went on to serve as chairman of the department, and was appointed as the first Dean of Faculties in 1940. Orah was active in university life, and in 1947 she founded the General Association of Teachers, Employees, Wives, Administrators of the Yooniversity (GATEWAY) club to promote sociability among members of the entire University. Orah died in 1972.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Research and writings, and General files.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Research and writings, and General files. The Correspondence consists largely of letters from Indiana University friends and faculty and also includes letters of sympathy following the death of Herman T. Briscoe in 1960.

The Research and writings series consists primarily of papers relating to her master’s thesis on Indiana authors. Included are author correspondence files which hold letters from Indiana authors, authors’ family members, public libraries, and publishing companies. The general research correspondence includes a letter from the English Department awarding her MA. Also included is a typed and handwritten draft of her thesis, The Hoosier School of Fiction, pt. 1: Indiana Fiction Before 1870, as well as poetry authored by Briscoe.

General files include clippings, programs for musical performances, and GATEWAY meeting announcements on index cards.
