Abstract
The School of Journalism at Indiana University was established within the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911 as the Department of Journalism. The name was changed in 1974 to the School of Journalism, and it became an independent school in the IU system in 1986. This collection consists of records collected by the Office of the Chair primarily during the tenure of John E. Stempel, who was chairman from 1938-1968.

Access Restrictions

Collection is open for research. Advance notice required.

Administrative History

The School of Journalism was established in 1911 as the Department of Journalism and was at that time part of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1932, IU students could earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism for the first time. The name of the department was changed in 1974 to the School of Journalism, but remained as part of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1982, it became a system-wide school, coordinating journalism courses across all eight campuses. It became an independent school within the IU system in 1986.

John E. Stempel was head of the Department of Journalism from 1938 until he retired in 1968. He was a classmate of famed World War II reporter Ernie Pyle at Indiana University. During Stempel’s chairmanship, the School of Journalism moved to Ernie Pyle Hall, where it remains today. In addition, it was during his leadership that the highly-respected High School Journalism Institute was established in the summer of 1946.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into one series, Administrative files, and arranged in alphabetical order.

Scope and Content Note

The collection has been organized into a single series of Administrative files, arranged alphabetically by folder heading. The records span 1922-1976, with the bulk dating from 1938-1968. Materials in the collection include correspondence, staff records, research, clippings, reports, contests, and information on organizations and departments. Prominent in the collection are faculty annual reports, records related to the Associated Press and its state photo contest headed by John E. Stempel, workshops developed and run by the school, departmental correspondence, and records related to the Indiana Daily Student and other campus publications.

Separated Material

IU newspaper and magazine publications that were not related to research or correspondence were pulled.
