Administrative History
Mortar Board, Inc. is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for
their achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service. Originally open only to
women, in 1975, the group admitted men. The Indiana University chapter was
established in 1921 to “promote interest in scholarship, campus activity and
womanliness.” Still active on campus today, the IU chapter is now known as the Mrs.
Granville Wells Chapter, named for Anna Bernice Wells, mother of IU’s much loved
Herman B Wells.
On May 11, 1938, Louise Wylie, Jean Schmalz, Alice Binkley and Catherine Royer met
over lunch to discuss the possibility of establishing an alumnae club for the group.
Less than a month later, the Mortar Board Alumnae Club was officially established
with the election of officers and collection of dues. Based on the group’s minutes,
the early goal appeared to be primarily one of support for the actives. The last
records in the collection date to 1966, but it is unknown if an Alumnae Club still
exists or when it went inactive.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into one series.
Scope and Content Note
The material of the Indiana University Mortar Board Alumnae Club consists of one
series of Administrative files (1936-1966).
This small collection contains several membership lists that had been composed or
revised throughout the organization’s existence. The most comprehensive list
includes honorary and annual member names and addresses from 1921 to 1950. Another
list was compiled by Mrs. Leon Wallace for the years 1950-1951 with an addendum for
missing members from 1924 to 1947. In 1961, an abbreviated list of the names and
addresses of 1922 -23 members was completed. Two lists containing member names and
addresses for the years 1926 and 1936 are also part of the collection.
Catherine Royer’s notebook contains a type written copy of the organization’s
constitution, financial reports for 1939-40, and the monthly program from October
1941 to May 1942.
Other materials included in the collection are a Mortar Board Newsletter from 1952
published by the Bloomington Alumnae chapter which previews plans for the group’s
thirtieth reunion, lists scholarship award winners, honors deceased members, and
provides updates on members.
