Biographical Note
Dr. Michael Molenda was born on November 19, 1941, in South Bend, Indiana. He
attended Marquette University High School, a Jesuit school in Milwaukee, majoring in
classics. Following High School he attended Marquette University with an interest in
writing and journalism. He earned a BA, cum laude, in Speech (Television) and
English in 1963. After his graduation from Marquette, Molenda competed for and was
awarded a doctoral fellowship to study instructional technology at Syracuse
University under the National Defense Education Act. While at Syracuse his mentor
Donald P. Ely helped Molenda gain a Ford Foundation internship at the National
Education Association in Washington D. C. in 1965.
In 1967, Molenda earned his Master of Science in Instructional Technology from
Syracuse. During his doctoral studies Molenda accepted a position as an Assistant
Professor with the School of Education at the University of Northern Carolina at
Greensboro. At UNC-G he developed and taught graduate courses in instructional
media, served as Coordinator of the Center for Instructional Media, and planned its
new facilities. His work at UNC-G brought him to the attention of the major
professional association, the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction (later the
Association for Educational Communications and Technology-AECT), where he met
association leaders that included Indiana University professor Robert Heinich. After
completing his doctorate at Syracuse in 1971, Molenda joined the Instructional
Systems Technology faculty at IU. Molenda spent the rest of his career at IU.
Molenda compiled a long list of achievements while serving as faculty at IU. Some of
his major achievements included nationally recognized workshops, his foundational
publication,
"Instructional Media and the New
Technologies of Instruction,"
and consulting in Europe, Latin America,
Northern Africa, and Asia. Molenda was also a leader in the Association for
Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).
Along with all of his accomplishments as a researcher, Molenda received much
recognition for his teaching including the Student Choice Teaching Award. Molenda
served as the chairmen of the department of Instructional Systems Technology from
1988-1991. Molenda retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in 2005.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into five series: Biographical information, Writings,
Teaching files, Presentations, and Textbook subject files.
Scope and Content Note
The collection is organized into five series: Biographical information, Writings,
Teaching files, Presentations, and Textbook subject files.
Biographical Information includes Molenda's notes about the collection, annual
faculty reports compiled by Molenda from 1973-2004, and biographical information
Molenda collected over the years, including evaluations of his performance as a
scholar and teacher. Because of these evaluations and other confidential
information, access to this latter file is restricted.
The Writing series is divided into two sub-series: Books, and Articles, book reviews
and reports. The Books sub-series consists of all eight editions of Molenda's
Instructional Technology and Media for Learning
textbook. The Article sub-series includes articles, review, reports and
bibliographies written by Molenda during the period from 1968-2008.
The Teaching files series of the collection includes samples of his teaching filed
under course number. Included in this series are records documenting modules he
developed in the early 1970s, including a set of self-instructional modules to be
used by students of the School of Education who were studying various topics related
to media and technology.
The Lectures series include a keynote presentation for EduTec in 1986, held in Tokyo
on education technology, along with materials for his lectures in Spain in 1987.
There are also presentation materials such as manuals, transparencies, and notes
within this series.
Finally within the Textbook subject files series, there are records documenting
Molenda's work on the various editions of the
Instructional Technology and Media for Learning textbook and workshops
that he taught on that topic. Papers in this series include agreements and
contracts, reviews and awards, photos and newsletters, and workshop curriculum
material.
