Abstract
Jesús Dapena is Professor Emeritus of Kinesiology at Indiana University. Over the course of his career, he conducted many studies in the biomechanics of human movement with a focus on sports biomechanics. This collection consists primarily of research notes, reports, and publications. It also includes some professional correspondence.

Access Restrictions

Collection is open for research. Advance notice required.

Biographical Note

Jesús Dapena was born on November 12, 1949 in Marin, Spain. He received his Ph.D. in Biomechanics from University of Iowa in 1979 and began teaching at Indiana University in 1982. Dapena has used his theoretical research on human movement on the techniques of various athletes, including Olympic athletes. Much of his research focuses on track and field sports, particularly the high jump.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Publications and reports, and Research notes.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Publications and reports, and Research notes.

The Correspondence series, 1971-1999, consists of professional correspondence received by Dapena and is arranged in chronological order. Early correspondence focuses on Depena’s academic and career choices, while later correspondence relates to various publications and studies that Dapena authored.

The next series, Publications and reports, includes copies of Dapena's published works and reports from studies he conducted, also arranged in chronological order. The collection includes several reports from the Elite Athlete Project and Scientific Support Services conducted by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Dapena has been the biomechanics researcher in charge of the high jump event in these projects since 1982. He also served as researcher in charge of the hammer throw from 1982 to 1983. The records in the series spans the period from 1974-2013.

The Research notes series, 1965-2013, is further organized into subseries based on the subject sports (high jump, hammer throw, etc.). Each subseries is in chronological order.

Separated Material

Two mini DV tapes were transferred to Accession 4411. Some photographs of Dr. Dapena and black and white images of a high jumper using the Fosbury flop method were removed and are stored with the Archives photo collection.
