She received her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (1963 and 1968), and a bachelor's from Mary Baldwin College (1960). She served as Director of Women's Studies (as the department was known until 1997 when it changed to Gender Studies) from 1985-1991 and later as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1998-2003. Arrangement

Collection is organized into three series: Teaching, Research notes and correspondence, and Manuscripts and publications.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is organized into three series: Teaching, Research notes and correspondence, and Manuscripts and publications.

The Teaching series is a single folder containing a few syllabi from classes taught in 1989 and 1992. The courses are: "Women in Culture: An Introduction to Women's Studies—The Arts and Humanities," and "Folklore and Literature."

The Research notes and correspondence series is arranged alphabetically by topic and contains research dated 1972-1979. The research focuses on Robert Burns within a folkloric context.

The Manuscripts and publications series spans 1971-1991 and is further organized into two subseries: General, and Burns and Tradition. The General subseries consists of Brown’s writings on various folkloric topics with a focus on Robert Burns. The Burns and Tradition subseries consists solely of files relating to the book-publishing process for Brown’s Burns and Tradition between the years 1972-1985. Included in this series are research notes, manuscripts, correspondence with publishing agents and promotional materials for the completed book, all of which are arranged chronologically.
