This collection consists of files regarding the funding for the Center for Excellence in Education and plans for numerous projects.

Administrative History

The Center for Excellence in Education was established in 1982 under the direction of Howard Mehlinger with the mission to encourage research in the "ways technology can be employed so as to enhance learning while making instruction more accessible" (Mission Statement). The intent of the center was to train educators and pursue new technologies in all educational settings, from kindergarten to corporate training.

Throughout its existence, the Center was active in hosting seminars, developing international partnerships and implementing new technologies in the classroom. Perhaps the most notable of its partnerships was with Ryazan State Pedagogical University in Russia, in which an exchange program of educators was implemented for the purpose of modernizing curriculums and training in new technologies. The Center for Excellence in Education also worked with AT&T as early as 1993 to create electronic textbooks available for students on a computer the size of a clipboard. In 1999, the Center for Excellence in Education merged with the Center for Research on Learning and Technology.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and Programs. The Administrative files series has two subseries: General and Grants and funding. The Grants and funding subseries is organized into three groupings: AT&T-IU Alliance, Congressional funding, and Miscellaneous grants. The Program files series is further organized into four subseries: Ryazan partnership, Civic Education Workshop, International Invitational Workshop, and Miscellaneous Programs.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and Programs. All series are arranged chronologically as received from the organization.

The Administrative files series has two subseries: General and Grants and funding. The Grants and funding subseries is further organized into three main groupings by funding source: AT&T-IU Alliance, Congressional funding and Miscellaneous grants.

The General subseries of the Administrative files series contains concept papers, potential plans and reports of the Center from 1980-2002. In order to accomplish its goals, administrators sought funding outside IU. Major funding sources included companies such as AT&T and various government agencies, and these agreements and project proposals can be found in the Grants and funding subseries.

The next series, Program files, is further organized into four subseries: Ryazan partnership, Civic Education Workshop, International Invitational Workshop and Miscellaneous Programs.

Indiana University partnered with Ryazan State Pedagogical University in 1994, and the Center for Excellence in Education was responsible for coordinating the visits with the Russian educators. The Ryazan Partnership subseries contains program proposals and information relating to the participants through 1998.

The International Invitational Workshop on Technology in K-12 Classrooms was held in 1997 and featured scholars from around the world. Participant files and plans for the event are in the "International Invitational Workshop" subseries of the "Program files" series.

The subseries "Civic Education Workshop" documents a six-week workshop in 1998 on civic education for Russian scholars. Included here are participant folders, evaluations and schedules.

The "Miscellaneous Programs" subseries of the "Program files" series contains information regarding other projects and collaboration from 1989-1999 developed by the Center for Excellence in Education, including files on the partnership with Bloomington's Harmony School, conferences sponsored, and the Center's partnership with Wisdom Tools.
