Edward Everett Edwards was born in 1908 in Bloomfield, Indiana and entered Indiana
University in 1924. Following his graduation from the School of Business, he spent a
few years in Chicago working for AT&T and the Western Electric Company. Edwards
returned to IU for graduate work in 1932, earning his MS in Business Administration
in 1934. As a graduate student, Edwards met Herman Wells, who was then an Assistant
Professor at Indiana University but was also involved with the Study Commission for
Indiana Financial Institutes. In 1933, Wells chose Edwards to be his assistant in
his work with the state. Wells and Edwards completed their project in Indianapolis
in 1935, at which time Wells returned to IU to serve as the dean of the School of
Business Administration, while Edwards spent a year serving as state director of the
National Youth Administration. When Wells became president of the University in
1937, Edwards returned to be his assistant once again. Even in his time as Wells's
assistant, Edwards made several contributions to the University in his own right. He
established a personnel and placement division in the business school and conducted
research on topics such as women's education and bank personnel. Edwards took a
leave of absence from IU in 1942 to join the military but returned to the University
in 1945. At the time of his retirement in 1973, Edwards was given emeritus status
and remained involved with the University until his death in 1984.
Collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Class materials, and
Research. All series are arranged alphabetically by folder heading.
The papers of Edward E. Edwards are organized into three series: Correspondence,
Class Materials, and Research. The papers include records related to his
professional life at Indiana University, his involvement in professional
organizations related to his field of study, and his personal life. All of these
interests overlap in such a way that separating the records documenting the various
aspects of his life would have been difficult.
The first series, Correspondence, spans the period from 1936-1942 and is primarily
related to Edwards's research on banking. The Bank Study and Personnel
correspondence consists of requests from Edwards to bank managers across the state
to assist in his research and the replies to those requests. Prominent in the series
are the Indiana Bankers Association and Indiana Academy of Social Science files,
which are filled with routine administrative correspondence. Throughout the
correspondence series there are files documenting a wide range of subjects, for
example, his bank research, his involvement in various organizations, and his work
at Indiana University.
Class Materials, 1915-1941, consists of Edwards' lecture notes and annotated
bibliographies for courses that he taught as an Assistant Professor in the School of
Business. Course subjects represented include Bank Management, Commercial Banking,
Noncommercial Banking, and Bank Credit.
The Research series spans the years from 1924 to 1942 and includes a variety of
research materials relating to Edwards's work as President Wells' assistant, his
involvement in bank research, and his own research about education. The Examiner's
Reports files (originally comprising 3 linear feet) were sampled so that a random
selection of bank profiles remain. Research for and drafts of a book about bank
personnel are found under Edwards' work with the Indiana Bankers Association. Other
organizations connected with Edwards's research include the American Bankers
Association, Indiana Academy of Social Science, and Indiana Association of
Economists and Sociologists.
