Abstract
The newsletter The Dagger was created by members of Indiana University’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity in the late 19th century. The newsletters offered an outlet for the writers’ thoughts about IU faculty, president, and fellow students. This small collection consists of four issues of The Dagger, spanning 1875-1880.

Administrative History

The Dagger was started by members of Indiana University’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity and reviewed professors, commenting not only upon their teaching abilities but also their personalities. In an undated letter from James A. Woodburn to President Herman B Wells, Woodburn claims that the newspaper was started in the Old Woodburn Home. Available in single issues for 50 cents, The Dagger was only published once a year and appears to have been a student fixture from June 1875-June 1880. During that time, noted faculty included such well-known names as T.A. Wylie, Daniel Kirkwood, and Elisha Ballantine. Along with citing the abilities of different professors, the writers of the papers had no problem with discussing the merits and demerits of their fellow students.

The Dagger’s successor, The Scourge, was produced by the same organization. The Archives holds only a photocopy of Volume 1, No. 1, circa 1880, and it is housed in the Archives reference files. Consult Archives staff for details.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into a single series of issues, arranged chronologically.
