Abstract
Indiana University's Collins Living-Learning Center (LLC) was established in 1972 - one of the first in the country -
in the Men's Residence Center (MRC). Eventually the LLC took over the entire MRC and was renamed after IU professor
and administrator Ralph L. Collins. It has since expanded to include “The Hill,” Brown and Greene, and Hillcrest
(apartments for juniors and seniors). The Collins community is intentionally academically diverse, and students pursue
majors across the university. Collins is host to a wide variety of programs and events planned through one of many
student groups such as the Board of Education Programming (BOEP), Arts Council, Community Council, and the Board of
Programmers (BOP), or as student Q projects through CLLC-Q 199: Residential Learning Workshop. The materials in the
Collection represent both the administrative and student aspects of the Collins Living-Learning Center.

Administrative History
In 1924 Washington Hall (later renamed South Hall and then Smith Hall in 1959) opened as the first on-campus dormitory
for men. In 1940 North and West Halls (later renamed Cravens and Edmondson) were added to form what was then called the
Men’s Residence Center (MRC). At the request of residents, the Center admitted women for the first time in 1970.
In addition to being known as the traditional home of the championship Indiana University swim teams, during World War II
in July 1942, the MRC became home for 200 Navy yeoman while taking courses on storekeeping, disbursement and typewriting.
North Hall was known as the “U.S.S. Indiana.” The MRC again filled a housing need during the Cold War 1950s and 60s for
students taking federally funded intensive language and cultural education courses.
In 1971, the University sought to turn the MRC into office and classroom space, but a groundswell of students formed the
“Save MRC” campaign, which ultimately was successful in retaining the MRC as student living space. Instead at the urging
of the students and a group of administrators through the College, in 1972 the MRC transitioned to become a living
learning center offering a range of educational opportunities within a housing environment. In 1980 the living-learning
center was renamed the Collins Living-Learning Center (CLLC) in honor of Ralph L. Collins, an IU English professor and
administrator who served as the MRC’s first headmaster. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Greene and Brown dormitories
which were built in 1961 as part of the Woodlawn dormitory complex were absorbed by the CLLC. These buildings comprised
what was known as “the hill,” which served the CLLC until the 2014-2015 academic year when those buildings were vacated
to make way for a new Informatics building. Between 1998 and 2000, Collins acquires all but the north wing of nearby
Hillcrest apartments, which were reserved for juniors and seniors who wanted to stay involved in the CLLC and to mentor
younger students. The north wing of Hillcrest becomes part of Collins in fall 2015 and houses the Collins Clubhouse on
the ground floor, moved from Brown first floor and whose original home had been at 809 E. 8th St.
Today “Collinsites” are intentionally academically diverse pursuing majors across the university and play a central role
in curriculum selection, designing programming, and governing the center. Collins courses are comprised of 3 hour
Seminars (which are selected by the residents), innovative peer taught Q classes, as well as other one and two credit
hour and summer courses on a range of subjects including the environment, service and the arts.
The student body of Collins also maintains an active program schedule such as annual events organized by the Board of
Programming (BOP) including the Dickens Dinner which dates back to 1978 and the Viennese ball which dates back to 1983;
fireside chats and professor dinners planned by the Board of Educational Programming (BOEP) and an active Arts Council,
a student group which manages several onsite visual arts studios and workshops and produces publications including The
Dancing Star literary/arts magazine dating from 1976 and The Collins Columns, a weekly journal which includes a mix of
student news, creative submissions and a calendar of events, and numerous others as well.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into eight series: Collins Historical Information (1924-2013) Administrative (1938-2012),
Publications (1926-2014), Student Groups (1950-2014), Programs and Events (1975-2012), Course Materials (1970-2013),
Admissions records (1971-2012), and Media and Memorabilia (1926-2009).
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists primarily of records from the Collins Living-Learning Center era (post-1972) however, some
material does document the earliest history of South Hall and the Men’s Residence Center. It is organized into eight
series: Collins Historical Information (1924-2013) Administrative (1938-2012), Publications (1926-2014), Student Groups
(1950-2014), Programs and Events (1975-2012), Course Materials (1970-2013), Admissions records (1971-2012), and Media
and Memorabilia (1926-2009).
The first series, Collins Historical Information consists predominantly of newspaper clippings and brochures documenting
the development, events and programs of the Men’s Residence Center later known as the Collins Living-Learning Center.
Also included is a guestbook from 1986-1990.
The Administrative files series is further divided into 8 sub-series. Arranged chronologically the first subseries Establishment
and Evolution (1938-2010) includes an array of correspondence and reports documenting the changing mission and programing
of the Collins Living-Learning Center; the second consists of Annual Reports (1961-2012). The Advisory Board /
Faculty Curriculum Committee sub-series (1971-2005) is again arranged chronologically and includes minutes, reports and
correspondence relating to decisions regarding the activities and curriculum of the Center. The Financial records sub-
series (1992-2010) includes budgets, correspondence and reports for Center events and programming. The Residential
Programs and Services records (1959-2012) includes correspondence, manuals, committee and officer files and notes. The
Correspondence (1971-2012) includes that of Collins administrators such as Directors Ernest Berhardt-Kabish and Carl
Ziegler while the Alumni sub-series (1990-2012) includes materials relating to alumni events as well as correspondence
with former students. The final General sub-series (1957-2008) contains a mix of files such as CLLC constitution and
bylaws, manuals, grant applications and resident lists.
The third series, Publications, is organized alphabetically and then chronologically and is further divided into two
sub-series, Student Publications (1926-2014) and Collins Living-Learning Center Publications (1976-2014). The first,
includes copies of numerous student publications printed over the years for varying lengths of time. Two of the longest
running are
The Dancing Star literary magazine and
The Collins
Columns
which includes a mix of news such as information about upcoming films, intra-murals and dances and
student creative writing features. Also, of interest here is a yearbook from South Hall (present day Smith Hall) from
the 1926-1927 academic year as well as
The Corridor newspaper from 1946-1953. The second
sub-series consists primarily of Collins marketing such as flyers and brochures for events.
The Student Group records are further divided into 8 sub-series. The first Arts Council sub-series (1976-2009) includes
records such as committee lists, meeting agenda and event proposals. The Board of Educational Programmers records
(1979-2011) includes related correspondence and course proposals. The Board of Governors sub-series (1974-2011), includes
meeting minutes and bills as well as notes and officer correspondence. The Board of Programmers records (1973-2011)
include records relating to the planning of events such as Collinsfest, Dickens Dinner and the Viennese Ball including
budgets, committee lists and publicity. The Community Council sub-series (1972-2014) consists primarily of meeting
minutes, notes and correspondence with officers while the Executive Council sub-series (1977-2010) includes officer
binders and correspondence, meetings minutes, reports and related correspondence. The final General sub-series (1975-
2004) includes files from small committees such as E-Force, the Student Judicial Committee and the Sustainable Food
Committee as well as copies of the constitution and bylaws.
The Program and Event files are divided into four sub-series. The Residential Programs files (1975-2012) consist of
records relating to events such as new student orientation and Welcome week as well as calendars and program handbooks.
The Visiting Scholars Program files (1975-2008) contain administrative records such as correspondence, reports and
budgets. Arranged roughly in chronological order, the Events files (1995-2012) include detailed information about
special events such as proposals, correspondence as well as budget, scheduling and registration information. The final
General sub-series (1973-2009) consists of a mix of publicity and files relating to shorter-term programs such as fieldtrips
and philanthropy.
The Course Materials Series (1970-2013) includes course proposals for seminars taught by faculty as well as the peer
taught Q199 courses. Also included are course readers as well as general administrative materials used for scheduling
and publicity and “A History of Curriculum Development which documents the evolution of Collins courses from 1972-1993”.
The Admission files series (1971-2012) is restricted as it consists almost entirely of student applications for entrance
into the Collins Living-Learning Centers as well as supporting documentation.
The final Media and Memorabilia Series is further divided into two sub-series of Scrapbooks (1926-1997) which cover
Collins events such as the Dickens Dinners, clubs and other campus events while the second sub-series of ephemera
includes banners and T-shirts from events.
