Abstract
The Girl Friday Club was founded in 1964 as a social club for secretaries and female office workers of Indiana University. It was run by a Steering Committee that planned luncheons, entertainment, and outings for the women in order to encourage familiarity among women working in different departments. The scrapbook covers activities from 1964-1972 with a few papers about the activities of 1975.

Administrative History

The Girl Friday Club was an organization for the female secretaries and office workers of Indiana University. The idea for the Girl Friday Club is attributed to Jack Ray, IU’s Director of Personnel. The notion was that a social club for these women would foster friendships that would lead to interdepartmental cooperation.

The club was run by a Steering Committee which organized luncheons, generally occurring monthly or bimonthly throughout the school year, open to any woman in the club. These luncheons would have entertainment in the form of speakers, demonstrations, and singers. The last year of club activity documented in this collection was 1975.

Arrangement

The Collection consists of a scrapbook and a few loose papers.

Scope and Content Note

The scrapbook in this collection contains information about the Club’s founding, newspaper articles, Steering Committee roster for 1964-1972, information on awards and events, and comics regarding the profession of a female office worker.
