Emmett Tyrrell, Jr. (B.A. 1965, M.A. 1967), in 1967,
The
Alternative
was founded as a conservative challenge to the political
left of the era with an emphasis on free enterprise and democratic values. In the
early 1970s, distribution moved nationally and in 1977 the publication was renamed
The American Spectator. In 1985 the company moved
from Bloomington, Indiana to Washington D.C. The collection consists of issues
dating from 1967-1977.

1967, The Alternative was founded as a conservative challenge to the political left
of the era with an emphasis on free enterprise and democratic values. In the early
1970s, distribution moved nationally and in 1977 the publication was renamed The
American Spectator. In 1985 the company moved from Bloomington, Indiana to
Washington D.C.

Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of issues of
The Alternative,
a conservative magazine that challenged the political left of the era, spanning
1968–1972. Often light-hearted and satirical, articles cover national issues such as
the George Wallace presidential campaign of 1968, the Vietnam War, socialism and the
free market and social issues such as abortion, gender equality, welfare and the
place of the military in American society.
