The position of Dean of the Faculties at Indiana was created in May 1940 with the
purpose of overseeing the administration of academic affairs at Indiana University.
Previously these duties were performed by the President's Office. In creating this
office, university president Herman B Wells hoped to redistribute his duties,
particularly ones he could not fulfil during his absences, by giving the Dean of the
Faculties responsibility for undertaking some of the public appearances, acting on
academic problems and proposals, and serving as a member of all university faculty
groups. Budget control was the primary responsibility assigned to the Dean of the
Faculties, as the Dean controlled all academic budgets and played a key role in the
development of annual budgets.
Over the years, the scope of the Office of the Dean of the Faculties expanded to
include various aspects of faculty and curriculum administration at Indiana
University, such as: evaluation of applications for sabbatical leaves, review of
dossiers for promotion and tenure, negotiation of individual grievances, analysis of
recommended terms of appointment to assure conformity with university policies,
review of all proposals for curricular and degree program changes on the campus,
administrating policies affecting associate instructors, and administration of the
Patten Foundation and Horizons of Knowledge lectureships.

The collection is organized into two series: Administrative Files and Chronological
Records.
This collection contains correspondence, committee files and minutes, budgets,
reports, memoranda, and other materials documenting the Office of the Dean of the
Faculties' involvement in almost every facet of the daily operations of the
university. Files can be found on virtually every academic program and university
service. A few of the more prominent entries include: Academic Handbook, Calendar
Committee, Budget, Horizons of Knowledge, Instructional Development Fellowship,
Review Committee, Lilly Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowships, Patten Foundation,
Research and Graduate Development, student services and programs, and University
Division.
The collection also contains various files of administrative policies and procedures
concerning faculty members. These files cover such areas as: promotion and tenure,
recruitment, sabbatical leaves, retirement, salaries, complaints and grievances,
multidisciplinary ventures, affirmative action, review committees, research,
etc.
The Office of the Dean of the Faculties also oversees curriculum development and
various academic administrations. File topics include: Admissions, Degree Program
Proposal Committee, Assistant Instructors, foreign language study committee, grading
policies, registration, etc.

The Administrative files series (1946-1982) makes up the bulk of the collection and
includes files on various administrative units, professional schools, academic
departments, and degree programs, as well as files related to specific policies and
policy committees and other topics. The series is arranged alphabetically.
The Chronological series (1950-1974) is arranged by year and includes materials sent
to and created by the Dean of Faculties between 1950 and 1975.
