Abstract
Claire Robertson is an Emeritus Professor of Women's Studies and History at Ohio State University and has been a visiting scholar, lecturer, and adjunct professor at Indiana University, Bloomington at various times since 1978. This collection consists of a portion of Robertson’s teaching materials, research, and writings on the history and culture of women in Africa, as well as records related to her career and professional activities at Indiana University.

Biographical Note

Claire C. Robertson (b. 1944) received her B.A. from Carleton College in 1966, her M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1968, and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1974. She is the author or editor of eight books and numerous articles on women, class and gender relations, and African studies. Dr. Robertson is the winner of the African Studies Association’s 1985 Herskovits Book Award and recipient of numerous other academic awards, grants, and prizes.

Throughout her career Robertson has taught courses at a number of universities and institutions and conducted research on African women, Third World women and socioeconomic change, female marketing systems, women and slavery in Africa and the Americas, Third World education, Third World development, feminist theory and research methodology, issues of the representation of African women, and comparative perspectives regarding colonialism and women. Between 1975 and 1976 Robertson was a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Bucknell University; between 1976 and 1977 she was an Assistant Professor of history at the State University of New York-Oswego; she researched in Ghana under the SSRC/ACLS (Social Science Research Council and American Council of Learned Societies) Grant between 1977 and 1978; between 1978-1980 she was a Ford Foundation post-doctoral grant holder; from 1980 to 1982 Robertson was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Ball State University; between 1984 and 1987 Robertson was an Assistant Professor in the Departments of History and the Women’s Studies Program at Ohio State University; between 1997 and 1998 she was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the Women’s Studies and History Departments at University of Wisconsin, Madison; in 1998 and 1999 she was a Senior Scholar in Residence at Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis; and in 1987 Robertson was appointed Associate Professor in the Departments of History and Women’s Studies at Ohio State University.

In 1987-1988, Dr. Robertson held a Fulbright Fellowship to study the development of Kenyan trade and market women in the Nairobi area. As an Assistant Professor and then as an Associate Professor of history and women’s studies at Ohio State University, Robertson was an active member of many committees and projects. She also participated in a number of community projects and professional associations relating to her research and academic interests such as the African Studies Association. As of March 2018, Dr. Robertson is currently an Emeritus Professor of Women's Studies and History at Ohio State University.

Robertson has also served in various capacities at Indiana University throughout her career. Beginning in 1978 she served as a Faculty Research Associate in the African Studies Program; in 1984 Robertson was the Co-Director of the Office of Women’s Affairs; from 1992 until 1993 she was appointed as a Visiting Scholar in the Women’s Studies Program; and she has since served as a Lecturer and been involved in IU’s Fair Trade Bloomington selling artisan-made items to benefit two projects Ndethya wa Ngutethya Women's Group and Spurgeon School for AIDS Orphans in Kenya. The Indiana University Press published her books, Sharing the Same Bowl: A Socioeconomic History of Women and Class in Accra, Ghana in 1984 and Trouble Showed the Way: Women, Men, and Trade in the Nairobi Area, 1890-1990 in 1997.

Scope and Content Note

This collection documents Claire Robertson’s research, writings, and professional and teaching activites throughout her career as a professor of history and women’s studies. It contains a significant amount of documents and data from her research projects, including surveys, questionnaires, interviews, notes, and correspondence. Also present are a number of articles, books, and drafts and manuscripts of publications resulting from her research, which include Sharing the Same Bowl: A Socioeconomic History of Women and Class in Accra, Ghana , Trouble Showed the Way: Women, Men, and Trade in the Nairobi Area, 1890-1990 , and Women and Class in Africa . Some significant topics represented in this collection are African studies, women’s studies, issues relating to female genital cutting, the Gá language, and images and research relating to markets, farming, the societies, and economies of Accra, Ghana and Nairobi, Kenya. The collection also contains materials related to Robertson’s activities as a professor and lecturer at universities, including course planning documents and lecture notes. Correspondence and other materials related to her participation in professional organizations and her presentations at various conferences are also present.

The materials of this collection are mainly textual, including research notes, manuscripts, correspondence, and course materials. Other formats present in the collection include floppy disks, photographs, photographic slides, and negatives, ephemera from Robertson’s travels, visual aids that were included in Robertson’s publications, and a small number of audio recordings. This collection contains oversize materials.

Separated Material

Separated materials include floppy disks that will be stored seperately for preservation. Publications and newspapers relating to the study of Africa have been transferred to the IU African Studies Collection. 5.4 cubic feet of materials from the teaching series relating to Robertson’s career at the Ohio State University have been transferred to OSU University Archives. Other items removed include: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, book and Audio Record, 1945; Sing a Song of History, Song by Ireene Wicker, The Singing Story Lady, Bluebird Records, Made by RCA Victor, 3 Audio Records; and undated Computer Punch Cards containing research data analysis.

The Professional Activities series (1980-2012) is organized into seven subseries. The Talks, Conferences, and Presentations subseries (1980-2012) contains items relating to various talks, presentations, and speeches that Robertson gave while attending different conferences during her career. The Saint Lucia Project subseries (1999-2009) contains materials relating to Robertson’s activities and speaking engagements on the St. Lucia research project. The Grant Proposals subseries (1988-1995) contains materials from various grant proposals Robertson created and submitted during her career. The African Studies Association (ASA) subseries (1977-2005) contains items relating to Robertson’s involvement with the association and her planning of a Women’s Conference in 1992. The Workshops and Conferences subseries (1987-2002) contains items from various conferences and workshops Robertson attended. The Other Associations subseries (1989-1999) contains materials from four associations that Robertson participated in during the 1990s. Robertson taught at a number of universities and institutions during her career. The Research series (1970-2000) is organized into three subseries according to the publications related to the research and into a fourth supplemental research subseries. The series contains an extensive amount of data, surveys, and other materials relating to the research Robertson conducted for her various publications including Sharing the Same Bowl , Trouble Showed the Way, and Women and Class in Africa. The Supplemental Research Materials subseries (1958-2000) contains research materials, papers authored by others and collected by Robertson, and background information collected by Robertson that was complementary to her research. This series contains vocabulary cards and books for learning Gã, a language spoken in Ghana were Robertson performed much of her research.
