Historical Note

“Clint Enterprises,” the fictitious company under which the Indiana Renegade was published, comprised of a number of Indiana University students headed by editor and publisher Clint Major, a senior during the 1955-1956 academic year when the Renegade was in production. Other students credited in the production included: Tom Barton, Rick Beckrich, Joe Boden, Alex Bottos, Jr., John Bowden, M.L. Clinton, Bob Conklin, Art Coyne, Pat Duncan. Solomon Edwards, Tom Hensley, Clif Ingram, Jay Joseph, Dyann Kaye, Dan Krivoshia, Eugene Matovich, John Peterson, Kay Place, Dick Pramuk, Rex Redifer, Al Rommel, Sam Schwartz, Tom Smart, Bart Thompson, Al Whittinghill, and James Work, Jr..

The Indiana Renegade was created with the intention of becoming a more outrageous and bawdy counterpart to other on-campus humor magazines such as the Crimson Bull. Operating as an independent publisher outside of university sanctions, the Renegade did not have a faculty advisor for the magazine, alternatively listing their advisor as the fictitious "Bolivar Potwalloper" or as "nobody." The Renegade was intended to be released semi-monthly during the 1955-1956 school year. It was printed with full-color covers by Owen Litho Service in Spencer, Indiana.

Arrangement

The collection contains three issues of the Indiana Renegade , organized chronologically.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the only three issues of short-lived, student-run publication from 1955 and 1956, The Indiana Renegade. Predominantly a humor magazine, the issues consist of a number of jokes, some benign relating to subjects like the troubles of parking on campus, while others are much more obscene. Written jokes and satire are presented next to cartoons and comics drawn by members of the staff, most notably Clif Ingram, Eugene Matovich, Tom Messelman, Al Whittinghill, Dick Pramuk, Rex Redifer, and an unknown cartoonist with the signature of "Chi." Also included are photographs of each issue’s "Renegade Queens" next to a brief bio on each woman, as well as the publication’s staff posing for satirical photographs. The Renegade is similar in flavor to other campus humor publications such as the Parks House Scribe and the Crimson Bull, however it did not include the same kind of editorial content as these other publications. Ads for a number of legitimate local business such as Nick’s English Hut and Import Motors are listed next to businesses imagined by the Renegade staff.
