Historical Note
The
Veteran was an independent, biweekly newspaper
published by Indiana University students from February 11, 1946 to February 3, 1947.
The purpose of the
Veteran was to provide incoming
and current veteran students with information that pertained specifically to them,
while also addressing current events and functions on campus.
The
Veteran debuted in Spring 1946 with the support of
IU President Herman B Wells, Indiana Governor Ralph F. Gates, and U.S. Senators
Raymond E. Willis and Homer E. Capehart. Originally, it was supposed to be a
one-semester project sighted to end after the final issue of volume 1 on June 3rd,
1946. However, because of the growth and support it gained during its first
semester, it continued to be published every other Monday during the following
summer and spring semesters. The co-editors for Volumes 1 and 2 of the
Veteran were Bill Small and Eloise Kelly Small. The
co-editors from Volume 3 were Donna Massey and Bob Towns.
During the last issue of the
Veteran, it was announced
that new ownership would be in effect, and a new name change to the
Alert was adopted. This change resulted both from the
growth of the publication and the fact that veterans on campus were better
integrated, thus not seeing a need for their own paper. The
Alert would still tackle veteran issues in an effort to keep to the
newspaper’s original purpose but would also focus more on campus life in general.
With this change came a new motto: “An independent weekly for ALL students of
Indiana University, veteran, independent, organized”. A preview of some of the
changes were displayed in the last issue of the
Veteran, while the rest would be put into effect during the following
issue, dated to be released February 24th, 1947. The ownership of the newspaper was
taken over by Gordon L. Smith and Robert L. Carroll, who served as co-editors. It is
not known if the
Alert went on to be published.
Arrangement
The collection consists of 1 bound volume of issues arranged chronologically,
followed by loose duplicate issues.
Scope and Content Note
The
Veteran was an independent student newspaper that
was published at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, from Spring 1946
through Fall 1947. A wide range of topics were covered in the
Veteran such as life in student trailer housing for veterans that were
single, married, and/or had families. This paper also touched on personal and
financial issues that the veterans faced, student organizations that they could
join, updates on the regulations of the G.I. Bill, and educational assistance
resources. Additionally, reporters highlighted student goals and achievements, new
classes and training opportunities (e.g. flight school), and contributions of
veterans to IU sports teams. Female veterans were mentioned occasionally, as well as
job opportunities for wives of veterans. Reoccurring columns such as “Trailin’
Trailers in Woodlawn Court” highlighted the personal activities of the residents,
such as who had a gathering, who was ill, and who was expecting a child. Other
columns, such as “By Martha”, which was an opinion piece directed towards the wives
of veterans, covered topics ranging from cooking to childcare. The
Veteran also featured local advertisements, a social
events calendar, and political cartoons.
